WoW - what's the obsession?

OK, everybody. I know a whole bunch of you guys play WoW. I played WoW for a bit myself, leveling up a Tauran Shaman to 16. It was fun. But I didn't feel obsessive about it. It was a very cluttered game. PvP (watching a lvl 60 friend, here) consisted of repeatedly running to the place where the horde and alliance were duking it out, dying, rinse and repeat.

What's so obsessive about it? Is it the crafting? The inventory culture, the desire for a matching set of pants to go with the helmet of doom?

What makes it so obsessive?

If you don't have friends or a community to be with then it can be very dry. But with the comradery and quests/goals it can be quite fun.
The obsession probably comes from either wanting to get better gear/status etc or the fact that the game is 'better' then everyday work and people forget their troubles when they play.
But also there is no 'end'. Counter-Strike has rounds so you could technically quit after the round and feel finished. But with these games because there is no 'end' you just want to get a little farther...
I dunno.

If you drop the obsession part then it really is awesome. =p

I ask the same question..

I think the answer is simple, its competitive gameplay. You can say the same about CS, or any deathmatch. Its competition...

The reason I dont play anymore is because it is so repetetive, and the end result isnt rewarding at all. Less pay off, for more work. I get a lot more fun out of a game of CS than I do a round of Warsong in WoW. With like 1000x less effort getting to that point.

The other reason is simply the style, im more of an elder scrolls person, and Wow is too cartoonish/fantasy in its art style for me to appreciate it. If wow were stricly Morrowind (realistic) looking I would be all over it.

The game essentially starts at 60. I however find it boring. Down time vs fun time is no where equal to other games. Also I don't like to play games that are hard to stop right where your at and get up. WoW takes a lot of time and dedication and essentially takes over your life.

If you play it, you'll know. As someone who gets addicted to games quite easily, I steer clear of MMO's. But I have a friend- he's learned moderation now, but there was a period where he stopped eating and showering to play... :/

I play CoV, and I contrast it with WoW, and I'm all... yeesh. CoV lacks an item-based system, and I think that is a good point - although others may think it a bad one.

I stay away from MMOs as well as I said earlier. My bro is a vegetable on that game. He hardly eats, rarely showers and good luck trying to get him to do anything like cook or do dished. He doesn't split jobs and is un employeed and doesn't go to school. What a great life.

I want to become your brother! Stupid school....and...job...

Seriously though, it's so fun. Best game I've ever played, which has replaced Goldeneye from the #1 spot on my "best game I've ever played" list.

It's just so fun. I have two characters that are 60, my main one I play is a warrior, I am rank 8, have been rank 9 in the past, and could hit rank 9 again today.

The game isn't all about gameplay, it's the great gameplay combined with the community. Also it may depend how much effort you put into the game and your character. If your character isn't very strong and is frustrating to PvP with, you may have a less than fun experience. Really the best aspect is probably PvP, and if you don't PvP, or do end-game raid content, the game will become ridiculously boring.

And as you said....only got to level 16. Time and time again I read on these forums people stop playing before even getting to level 20 because it was "repetitive," and while I don't disagree with you, it gets more fun at the higher levels. But I guess people know what they like, and if they're not gonna like it at higher levels, may as well quit before you put a lot of time into it.

It's just a well-made game that I always say "well, just one more hour" when I feel I should stop. I'm in a pretty decent guild too, which just makes it all the better, with scheduled raids and Battleground matches on a weekly basis. Then after the raids, me and a few others switch to our Dwarf Paladins on a different server under the guild name "Church of Hasselhoff".
Part of it's an ego thing too. To make your character a badass. Get him snazzy armor, a good mount, a respectable honor rank, and mop the floor with your enemies. You're not getting a good experience if you quit before lvl 16. Honestly, you experience relatively jack shit during that time. You have to wait until your mid-20's or 30's before it all starts getting real good. I can't wait for the expansion to come out.

Oh, and Barrens chat rules. Rules your mother hardcore style.

I should probably lay off it a bit. WoW seriously ate up a lot of my time, and I need to be careful.

MMORPGS are addictive, thats the way they are made - online drugs.

You could make a MMORPG about dog poo and within days thousands would be playing it trying to lvl up their piece of shit.

Just one more go...

LOL! Hahahaha...

WoW is as good as your friends list.

It's pretty boring played on your own, and not much better with people you don't know. Played with mates it's a wonderfully chilled and rewarding experience.

I got to level 17 and started making friends and getting really into it. And when I was lvl 60 I was minning and putting rares up on auction and pulling in the gold!
I got so into it I would play it up to 12 hours at a time!

sinkoman: Hey there Qonfused, wanna trade your level 5 Sharted On Jeans for my level 7 Fake Beard Of Feces +7aTK?

Qonfused: Could you take a +7sPD Laxative instead? I kinda need the jeans.

Computer: Trade Completed

Computer: ExLax has been added to the potions section of your inventory

I sorta find it hard to... socialise... at the lower levels, so i guess that's part of it.

I started playing because I played it at a friend's house, and I got addicted so I bought it myself. All my friends created a new character for me until I got up to lvl 10ish, I got into a guild, and I started getting even more addicted. Hell I'm only replying because of the server maintenance. Thing is, you'll need a few friends to really enjoy it.

yes.. but alot of video games dont envolve you locking yourself away for half the day in your room eating junk and getting fat whilst slaying some polygons with your level 57 rogue and having a love fling with a character called Kirsha from Holland.

Fox doesn't go to school because he graduated and he showers everyday :|

I'm sort of comparing it to CoV, especially at the lower levels. CoV seems a damn sight easier to socialise in.
