use displacement mapping, ;), then you dont need to bother with fiddling around with the shaping of the polygons to extrude any shape. all you need is a quality image of the handle, or make one yourself

i have never done displacement mapping befor :( got ne tutorials on how to do it ??

i can tell you right now if you want dude. its easy enough to follow in text. Just depends what program your using...?

and unfortunately as far as I know tutorials are sparse and hard to find as I found out, but luckily there was a tutorial in the program itself

Ill post one for 3D studio right here...

use a sphere and apply a clearly defined texture to it, as show 'DISP1.jpg'

drag your texture as an instant into the displacement slot on the texture swatch rollout, and set the value to -20, for best results for any similar surface to this, use two lights for your sphere. and convert it to an editable poly.

at the bottom of the editable poly rollout is - subdivision displacement

open it up and tick the box at the top. and under subdivision presets, click High, (high produces the best results, and when using Polygon meshes, keep the mesh simple when you want to apply Displacement, or long render times will occur). also make sure 'spacial and curvature' is selected. or if you meshsmooth before and select spatial only, you achieve this result 'DISP4.jpg'

this is the result. 'DISP2.jpg'

you can fiddle with the amount of displacement, just using the material manger. e.g 'DISP3.jpg' is set to -40

you can go onto add a bump map aswell, and specularity.

i think my model is just gunna end up being white :o i was just gunna do a nice GI render. is there a turotial in max you say?

yeh there is,, you'll find it, if not, you can try and follow what I wrote

cool

i have no idear with texturing ... well i carnt make them ne ways

ahh ok i have foudn the tutorial .... how would i go about just making it all white ?? would i need to make a grey and white texture ??

make it all white... ? I thought you wanted to get a convincing wrap appearance for the handle..? afterall this is the easiest way of modelling it, using displacement

you mean like just prep it for a GI lighting test first...?

yeh most of the detail is displacement mapping,, easy enough.. just make your texture, displacement map it, and drag the '100' next to Diffuse in the material editor, down to '0', and the shape of the map will be defined. but it'll appear up as the base colour 'grey' or 'white',, that image is awsome, and Im pretty sure thats not done in 3Ds, 3Ds doesnt seem to facilitate displacement mapping in such high quality, or maybe it does, and I just dont know how to use it brilliantly yet :P

ahhh lol just need to find a texture now :S any one wanna have a go at making one! :S

hey I will :) , Ill give it a go using your reference pic. and post it as a 1024 * 768 jpg

hehehe sweet :) i have another cool pic as well if its ne help... let me have a look...
]

ahg crap... the file is to big wont fit on ... nice quality as well :frown:

if you could shrink the image, or something that would be great :)

cool cool i will do

but i hg2g play a clan match quick :P soo ill post it up later

thanks it'll be done in around 30, and ill preview it in 3d studio for you to see how well it works. :). ( never mind better luck next time )

with todays modern upcoming engines yes, .. but that gets done ingame.

any hoo, heres the map, and the test that I did, tell me if you like it :)

ahh that looks pritty sweeeeeeeeeeet :)

did you have to unwrap the grip or would i have to to get it in the right place?

yeh unwrap it is best. or just create half the grip and use a planar, and clone it and attach them together to make the whole grip

well im not at the stage where im gunna be putting it on yet but will be soon. atm im in the process of making a dragon head which will go at the end of the holder(? what is the name of that sword bit) and for the end of the grip

here you are fishymumma... some of the kind of effects you can achieve using displacement in the right kind of places...

i believe the distal end of the grip on a katana is called the kashira. but that's just recalling from my aikido days, so don't quote me on that.

it looks really cool.. i love the way these 3d programs can make a flat plain look like a really detailed wall :)

akido rox

hehe that was postwhorish

Looking great, and I believe it is generally called a pommel with all swords.

well i started on the dragon head that will be on the ends of the grip and errr i forget what you people decided it was called but the sorwd holder

was really really messy before and i know there are loads of smoothing problems... but its still in wip

ahh its far from finished dude :) thats why there are all the seams and stuff.. the "beak" is kinda abit that goes over the eyes

just a quick update

it hasnt been smoothed and its not a fancy render or ne thing ill do that when its nrealy finished :)
