wtf are channels??

ok yea im a really big newb to steam but i dont see any "channels" whenever it loads up where do i go to to look at this or whatever and how will they release the media through it is it just gonna pop up and say download me or what? whenever i start it up this is what it has
settings
monitor
games
servers
friends
thats it im guessing cause i dled cs 1.6 and this just came with it so can someone show some nebie love and tell me whats up

Each of those are 'channels' I guess. If you want to play games click 'games'. The HL2 media will appear in the 'games' menu once they release it. Also, this thread belongs in the Steam section, not general discussion.
