Perhaps the most awesome game of all time. X-Com: UFO Defence, also known as UFO: Enemy Unknown. It's a turn-based strategy game from '93, in which you have to save the world from aliens. It's ABSOLUTELY AWESOME. Seriously, no game has ever come close. If I was locked in a room to play one game for the rest of eternity, it'd be X-Com. Screw the Half-Life series, X-Com whoops that hands down, which is quite something considering X-Com is a 2D sprite based, turn based game, and considering how much I love Half Life.

Anyone share my passion?

Random plug - there's a application that simulates online play over at ufo2000.sourceforge.net

Beta version > stable play, because I wrote some code for them out of respect.

ahh my friend used to paly that, i tried it out myself didnt like it that much it was funny though

Damnit, I just realised, as the forum's average age is 15, you're all too young to have played it ;(

I snagged a bargain bin copy several years back, but I never got a chance to really get into it. A shame I lost it now. :(

Hey I'm 15 and have played it!

In fact I loved it. The whole game seemed polished and there was so much to do (fight, equipment, base building etc).

Anything required to play it on XP? Anything else I should download that would imporve it? I think I will go dig up my copy of it.

Liar. I'm only sixteen but I played it quite a lot back in the day. Started young.

Ennui, if you play UFO2000 with me, I'll write you a tutorial for coding in HL2.

Well, I was going to write the tutorial anyways, but I'll write it quicker!

I'll play it with you then. Not tonight since I don't have time, but sometime soon :)

I played terror from the deep or something ages ago.

There are other similar games tactics-wise, but I couldn't name a game where you get to choose where on the planet you want to battle.

UFO: Aftershock is a good spiritual successor so I'm told. Although I must say it is addictive...

Angry Lawyer, I'm 15, and have played all the turn-based X-Coms, including Apocalypse which I liked.
I want a remake.:(

I tried and tried to get into the XCOM series...
But that turn-based concept really kills it for me.

I really wanted to like it, as everyone always talks of its awesomeness.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of turn based. It was hard for me to get into the Fallout series and Planescape, but...well...I did it. Though, I still prefer regular RPG combat. I wouldn't mind a X-Com-like RPG...

Turn based is 'regular' for RPG combat. That wonderful action stuff is looked down on by stupid purists. :(

Turn based allows for more strategy, which is why 'purists' tend to dislike real-time, since it's a lot more instinct and you don't have time to think out strategy, so it's more hack and slash.

Best system? Baldur's Gate, where you can pause it whenever you want to assign attacks and stuff.

Yeah, Baldur's Gate definitely perfected turn based combat. But RPGs to me are all about the story so eff strategy :p. Strategy is is for strategy games! ...And MP FPSs...

X-Com: Apocalypse was actually my favourite for some reason :O (I really thought the Sectoids were lame, bog-standard aliens y'see).

I played it to death, albeit on real-time (i.e., that simultaneous turn-taking mode) and loved every minute of it. Incediary autocannon for the win!

Yep, I've been playing games since I was 6, and deleting hard drives since I was 2
BTW, guys, you can download it here http://www.xcomufo.com/

I've been playing games since I was 2 years old!:D
Started with the good ol' Nes which sadly died when my mate slept over and woke up and confused it with our toilet(i.e. peed on it)!>_>

I myself thinks someone really should undertake to do an X-Com remake in the Silent Storm engine, it's a great turn-based strategy engine, but I doubt many people here have played the games, Silent Storm and the newly released Hammer & Sickle're both turn-based masterpieces imo.:p

I would've said younger, but my memory is messed up, I do remember gaming on an old Apple PC.

Fliko is officially the most mature 13 year old on the internet.

Never even heard of it..might have to check it out.

yeah xcom kicked some major ass but there were other turn based strategies I liked more

Turn based > real time. Good turn based combat games allow for a large amount of control, and therefore tactics. Real time combat games tend to be either a Diablo-like clickfest or a Dungeon Siege-like "click and wait" affair. I could give some other advantages, but they're RPG-specific and don't fit the thread. I also have a feeling it would be a waste of time anyway :p

Baldur's Gate was not turn based. It was realtime with pauses.

As for X-Com, I played it after I played Jagged Alliance 2, and compared to that game the combat feels primitive. Probably because it's several years older.

Thank you, but I can assure you that there hasn't been an RPG with good turn based combat for quite a while. Publishers don't like it because it doesn't cater to the masses.

Fallout 2 was the last one I played. :(

I'm a huge Xcom fan but I'm 29. In fact it's still my favorite game of all time and I still play it from time to time. It's funny because I have to run a program that slows my processor down by about 90% in order for it to play correctly. I still can't get the sound to work, but it's worth it to me.

Deformable terrain, TBS elements, base building, economic aspects, RPG elements, a good story and great action all under one roof. I love firing a rocket at a building and blowing off the entire side of the building to do a quick alien check.

I didn't like the aftermath game that was a rip off from Xcom in 3d. I thought it sucked. One game that I do consider the spiritual successor to Xcom is a GBA game called Rebelstar Tactical Command. It's made by the same people as Xcom, but it's quite a bit more limited than the prefect game known as Xcom.

Its a lot better :p

Aftershock huh? I don't think I've heard of that one. Maybe I confused the title Aftershock with the title Aftermath and immediately dismissed it. I'll have to look it up. Is it newer or older than Aftermath?

Its Aftermaths sequel.

It also has a lot more detail and apparently is more similar to X-Com than Aftermath.
