Hey Guys,

So after playing such space games like Escape Velocity Nova and Space Rangers 2, I decided to look for more space sims. I was very interested in EVE online at first, but I simply dont have the time or money to support an MMO, especially one with such a gargantuan difficulty curve.

So, I've given what I have been told is the single player equivalent of EVE, X3 a try. I gotta say, this game is very complex, but that also allures me. Right now, I only have the demo, but I'm enjoying it quite a bit right now (THIS is how demos should be done, take note developers).

Anyways, the main reason I'm posting this is because its complexity is as daunting as it is interesting. I was wondering if anyone had some advice for a beginner just starting out. I want to get the most out of the demo before decided whether to buy it.

Thanks for any tips/advice :)

is there a version of X3 without starforce?

Err... I'm not sure...

EDIT: Isn't it on Steam? Would that mean it doesnt use Starforce?

You didn't want to get X3 terran conflict?

I think the latest patch removed the starforce from the game. Can't remember.

Its hard to get used to. My advice, read the manual and some beginner guides online.

To be clear, I havent bought anything yet. I'm just trying the demo to get a feel for the game, and wanted to get the most out of it cause even though its a demo, there is so much depth.

Anyways, I read reviews for both, and it sounded like the gameplay of Reunion was better, but it was really buggy. I figured some patches would have come out by now, so I tried Reunion instead of Terran Conflict.

If anyone has opinions on which game is better, I'd love to hear them :)

Thanks everyone!

x3 is one of my all time favorites. Love the game. Let me know if you have questions, or visit...

Unfortunately I haven't tried the Terran Conflict yet as my gaming PC died.

I had a fleet of about 30 or so fighters, an M1, M2 a TL about probably 100 stations selling wares. What a great game, but very steep learning curve. Well worth it.

Or just wait till Apirl and then both X3 games will be sold toegther in one big pack with both free expansions.

In Issue 35 of the X-Universe News, we carried the exclusive announcement of the release of X3: Gold, as revealed by Egosoft Managing Director, Bernd Lehahn. The launch of this title, which will be available in Germany and across the EU, is scheduled for 9 April 2009.
This collector's edition, which is officially called 'X3: Gold Edition', contains both X3 games, including all updates and expansions.

The latest X3: Terran Conflict expansion, entitled 'The Aldrin Missions' will appear for the first time in this package and includes many new missions, new ships and sectors.

X3: Gold Edition represents a stunning conclusion to the X Trilogy and makes for countless hours of gameplay enjoyment.

As well as providing the player with boundless gameplay possibilities, the X3: Gold Edition also contains a Soundtrack CD with the music from X3: Terran Conflict.

Both games now allow access to the new 'Personal Uplink', part of Egosoft's online community. Using this facility players can compare their X-Universe statistics with one another.

The X3: Gold Edition pack features the following:

- X3: Reunion 2.5 including The Bala Gi Missions
- X3: Terran Conflict 2.0 including The Aldrin Missions
- X3: Terran Conflict Soundtrack CD
- X-Universe Personal Uplink access

More news on the new Personal Uplink feature will be available soon, right here at Egosoft.com.

X3 is ****ing awesome.
One of the few games where learning how to play is totally worth it.

Thing is though, the combat is fairly boring.

QFT!

Expect the combat part. I find it fun in small ships. When you get to bigger ships it tends to get boring.

But there are so many mods and scripts, it starts to take a life of its own.

D:

Terran's better because they changed the UI from Reunion.

The only thing holding this back from being better than EVE is the ridiculous UI and controls.

I don't see how EVE would take more time though, since you can train skills without even being logged in. With X3 you'd have to spend time doing stuff...

Well the UI in X3, I don't find too bad really. Eve's UI is not much better to be honest. Really both have bad UIs, but its had to get a good UI I think.

Well, in X3, you don't have to train anything. So you can jump right into anything as long as you have the cash.

Both are long games in their own way tho. And both are also good games. :D

so which protection is less crap? i.e. won't **** my PC
TAGES is less crap by far, when it comes to the danger of your comp.

It works by corrupting gamesaves and causing bugs if it detects the game is pirated iirc.:)

Like cash randomly dissappearing.

FYI, I have X3:TC with TAGES, and have both Alcohol 120% and Daemon Tools PRO on my comp, and have never had TAGES **** around with me because off it.

Whereas I've had StarForce refused to boot games because I have Daemon Tools installed.

The last patch totally removed Starforce from X3: Reunion. And it's an awesome game.
X3: Terran Conflict (retail) doesn't require internet activation and my computer is still healthy after playing it.

Indeed, speaking of X3:TC, it's retarded how the retail verson doesn't have a limited number of internet activations but the Steam version does.

It makes absolutely no sense seeing as Steam is essentially copyprotection in itself to begin with.

I got X-3...it wasn't that fun to me. I enjoy EVE, but not X-3. it's weird.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't EVE a MMORPG and X3 a single player game? In my opinion they belong to different, uncomparable categories.

Are there any twitch related controls in EVE? Eve sounds cool for what it is, but if I can't use a joystick to fly realtime, I have less than zero interest.

Then you won't like Eve. It's like someone who loves FPS's playing an RTS.

Everything else about the game sounds awesome though. Some of the stories I've read have really made me want to try it, but all in all you're probably right.

TBH like all MMOs(or games for that matter), stories or after action reports written by players usually sound a lot more awesome than they actually are in the game.

Good point, I learned that the hard way with Star Wars Galaxies back in the day.

Not to mention if you're in game at the time something goes down and using voice chat of any kind you suddenly have a few thousand people screaming in excitement, terror, etc. It sounds awesome but it really isn't.
