So i want to get a new mp3 player for xmas, i have a iRiver h10 5gb but its starting to act up, the usb cable doesnt work, the battery life sucks and its almost full.

i'm generally looking for one with good quality sound(i have decent earphones, the bud style ones) and a good battery life, my h10's batter life is appalling tbh.

I had a quick scan over at mp3.com and the latest Ipod 30/60gb seems to have the best rating. Do you really need so much space btw?

I mostly want it for music, i dont care so much for videos but then again my mp3 player atm doesnt support it so i dont know how popular it is these days to have video functionality.

You could buy a new phone. They're pretty good quality nowadays, compared to what they used to be, and most of them serve pretty well as mp3 players. My samsung G600 does, and it was better than the one I used to have which required AAA batteries, non rechargable.

Problem with iPods is they're so expensive, and you might as well be buying a new phone. Advantage of course is the quality and space for songs. Personally I'd never need that much space, and I can live on my micro SD card.

It really depends on how many songs you want.

hmm i wouldnt say i need more than 20/30gb, i have a phone that plays mp3s but i would prefer to have an mp3 player.

I'm happy with my iPod Nano. Intuitive, great battery life, small, and simple. Go with the 8GB iPod Nano.

I looked into a Zen Mirca (Think that's what it was) a while back. It looked awesome, but I lacked the cash. It had the vertical scroll, which was an advantage over the iPods circular (breakable) scroll at the time.

The Zune's Microsoft's mp3 player, isn't it? It sure does look better than it used to.

I'm getting the older iPod Nano next week for my birthday, 8GB. My theory is that there is no way 30 to 40GB is going to appeal to me simply because a) if I had all my music on there I would end up flicking through lots of crap I forgot I had in my collection and thus would spend ages selecting a certain song amongst hundreds of others, listening to it, then having to go back and find something else, and b) that isn't practical at all since I will be using it most whilst I'm riding my bike, and I'd prefer to put it on shuffle and get good song after good song from a smaller, more nit-picked selection of songs and albums.

It's all well people saying 'just make playlists out of all the best stuff' but then I'd be throwing GB's away that I don't need. I'm happy with just 8GB of fantastic music that's been hand picked which I'll change every so often, etc.

But that's just me.

No, it's the best thing to do. Most people seem to be too lazy to do it though. All my music's basically hand-picked. There's an occasional song I have on there I don't really listen to, but there's usually a reason behind it.
