I havent heard much about windows professional x64 edition? I just ordered it to run on my upcoming new computer that has an Athlon 64 x2 4800+.Do you think there will be any compatability issues with any of my 32 bit software? I know microsoft claims it will run 32bit software just fine, but microsoft sais alot of things lol :)

yea i havent heard anything bad about it but im just going to wait intil vista before i go 64bit since theres no need for 64bit right now

Well.. the only problem my friend got right now with the x64 version is that there's no firewall software that supports the x64 version.. so you'll have to stick with the default WinXP firewall.. which sucks :\
Oh, and you'll need the latest S-ATA drivers (if you got a S-ATA HDD) because you'll get an error if you'll try to install Windows so make a floppy disk with the latest S-ATA drivers (make sure they supports the x64 version) from your chipset website (VIA, Nvidia..) or you can try this site:

Hope I helped :)

is it faster,then 32bit version?

Well, when running 32bit programs (as in, almost everything that's out now), you'd expect it to be slower, actually, since it runs on a WOW emulation layer. People who've done tests have measured that there is surprisingly little slowdown, which is good.

When running 64bit programs, on the other hand, speedup can be slight to huge. Speedup results from general architecture improvements (like finally giving PCs a decent number of general purpose registers and passing parameters by register rather than a stack) as well as actual 64-bit related advantages (such as being able to memory-map large files).

Not sure if memory-mapping GCF files helps 64-bit Half-life 2, or if we need to wait for 64-bit Steam. Or possibly, the current solution works as well as memory-mapping, so they won't bother changing it.

The main problem was that only Athlon made 64 bit processors for home use. That meant that the market was 99.9% 32 bit Windows, so very few hardware and software companies supported it. A friend of mine just recently bought a socket 775 Pentium 4 processor that ONLY supports 64 bit Windows. That means that there should be much more interest in supporting 64 bit this year.

As for Vista, well, its just XP with a new 3D desktop. Every other feature that was going to make it important has been cut to get it in the shops as early as possible so its not worth waiting for.

sorry to bring up an old thread but I just made the change to 64bit (just got an AMD x2 3800+). In any case I can only take advantage of 64bit hl2 if I am running 64bit windows right? also performance wise how big of a difference is there between 32 bit hl2 and 64bit? Do you see a large increase of fps using the same setup (i.e. same graphics card but with the 64 bit drivers..ect)
