if i want to upgrade from xp home with servie pack 2, to xp pro, what do i have to do, will all me programs reamain?

You should be able to install pro over home with no problems.

However, things don't always go just right and you might be forced to reformat so make sure you have everything backuped just in case.

and why is it so important to upgrade from home to PRO. if you already have home, why do you need pro the diff. isnt that big. i would be wise and spend $200 on something else.

sorry to ask my own question here, but If I have a slightly messed up install of windows XP pro on my comp. could I just install it again over the old one or reformat? if i just install over it I have to reinstall my mobo drivers too right?

UPGRADING A OS IS NEVER A GOOD IDEA! A clean install and format is the way to go.
