If the xsi modeling tool hardness = 1000 then the following is true:
XSI - HAMMER = 999.99999. I just opened that thing up and really gave it a try. Holy s***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope some of you others are good at this, cause it will be a while on my part. BTW Any tips on actually FINISHING your first map?
 
no way they are about the same difficulty you can just pick up hammer like that just start useing the block tool and bada boom bada bing and you got something and then you look online for how to do entities and crap and you got it.
 
Modeling in Hammer is very simple--but very frustrating *slaps your hand as you reach for the carve tool*.

Modeling in XSI, once you hide all the animation and other advanced stuff, requires learning more, but is near painless. On the other hand, applying textures and exporting your models requires some know how.

So I think you're wrong about modeling in XSI--or at least, wrong to call it 'hard'. 'Complicated', yes. Same with entities in Hammer. Using them is easy--but only when you know how they actually work.
 
I tried to do a little modling for a map I'm doing becuase I can't make a smooth spiral in Hammer. I tried in XSI but then got overwhelmed and gave up. Ill be going back to XSI but probably not for mapping. (I dream of making movies)
 
U know when you modelled something in XSI do you have to texture it as well. And is the textures from HL2/CS or do you have to apply your own texture. I want to know before I download.

I've used XSI in the past but not this "HL2" version. Modelling is very straight forward and the keyboard layout is very intuitive, compared to other 3D packages. Texturing was the hardest thing.
 
That´s the reason why I want to have a export plugin for cinema4d R9 because Maxon´s Bodypaint 2 rocks big time when it comes to texturing models.
 
What is exactly the advantage of modeling brushwork in XSI? It seems to be, while XSI can be faster if you're experienced with it, less straightforward than simple Hammer. Sure, you can do complicated shapes, but you better not make them brushwork but meshes if it's really complicated. Not to sound like I'm judging XSI mapping, but I really want to know what's the advantage of it when doing brushwork.

Hmm, i have never mapped nor modeled before. Within a day of mapping, I had a working map of my house with lights and stuff. I can't even get a simple cylinder to be made correctly with XSI. When you don't know anything to start with, complicated = near impossible. Entities have several option fields that are related and thus it isn't too hard to get into. XSI has more options than I care to count. So, XSI is definitly harder.
BTW-Does anyone know any "making a complete block in XSI" type tuturials?
 
Sorry Deleter I haven't seen many tutorials with XSI (I'm sure there are many many out there though)

Anyone know how to make corkscrew in hammer or in XSI? I've been trying to make one for my map, but all I've come up with was something that looks like a spiral staircase. I'd like the top to be smooth, but cant work it out.
