Hello everyone,

I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong spot, just let me know where I need to be putting this!

I decided I didn't like spending time with my fiancee anymore ( :rolls eyes: ) so I made his year by buying him HL2. Sadly, the stock vid card in his Dell Dimension 3000 is not enough for HL2 and he doesn't have a AGP slot that most of the good graphic cards need.

I'm looking at the Xtasy Radeon 9200SE 256MB PCI Graphics Card because it's pretty cheap for a 256mb card.

My questions....

Will this card play HL2? Target.com doesn't say if it's DirectX 9 compatible.
Can he live with a 256mb card?
Can he live with a 128mb card?
Is $119.99 a good price?

Thank you to everyone who responds. Any help I can get with this is wonderful, amazing and just friggin' cool.

does he have a PCI slot or a PCI-E slot?

If a PCI-E is the PCI express slot, which is black, no. He just has the white PCI slot.

Is 256 needed for HL2, or can the whiny baby live with 128?

Thanks!

Steph

no u dont need 256mb on such a low end card 128mb is fine

just go ahead and get the 5700le, i just told my friend to get it, though he hasnt played halflife2 all the other games work fine

Memory on a graphics card does not make a whole lot of difference except for textures and AA at high resolutions. Since the card you are looking at (and all PCI cards) are not fast enough to run at high resolutions you dont need 256MB of ram. The 9200SE is a good very low end card but it is not really suitable for gaming (i had one as a filler until i got my 6600gt). It will run HL2 at medium settings at 1024x768. It wont be able to play many if not any of the new games at a playable framerates (i could barly play Doom3 at minimum). Also I got my 9200se for about $70 canadian and that was from a store so your price is not a good one.

If he is a gamer no he will not like a PCI card at all but if he barly plays he could find it ok. The 5700 is the best PCI card I have heard of however if you want to go for that. Both the 9200 and 5700 are DX8.1 cards in HL2 (although the 5700 can run DX9 in other games but not well). This will make the game look worse.

the 5700le and the 9200se will give u the same visual quality in hl2 but the 5700le is faster and also a great overclocker i overclocked mine from 250/400 to 450/450 very good buy for a pci card

Good, then I might get out of all this with a fiancee! If the card won't play other games very well, then he can't get addicted to them. YAY!

Bless you all, you're wonderful!

Thanks!

A very happy Steph

"Honey, will you quit playing that game for one friggin hour and help me with the dishes?!?!?"
"Okay." :: He walks into the kitchen from the office, stands there a moment and then before I can blink he's back at the computer.::

That's been my life since he got his new Dell and got Half Life (the first one) installed.

:: Oh, hi love!! ::

He actually bought the 9200SE from Target.com, but is now trying to cancel the order so he can get the 5700le.
