I have about 220 bucks and need to use it wisley for an upgrade for my computer. (to make HL2 run its best)

here are my current specs:

512 RAM
Radeon 9600 Pro
ASROCK K7S8X SiS 746FX Motherboard
1.57 AMD 233 mhz FSB
160 Gb HD
40 Gb HD
Dvd Burner

What would you guys recommened I do with my money???
What Is the best decetion to make... and buy something that will give my computer the bang for the buck??? any links would be good ?

new processor, dunno if anything remains to be spent... if it does, more memory

what will more memory do to a game ???? Arent I already overboard with 512 of RAM ?

I think the required RAM for HL2 was 256 and the suggest was 512.

What speed is your memory?
Is that 512MB 1 stick or 2 sticks?
You have a Athlon XP 1900+, right?

I would recommend simply buying a Athlon XP 2500+ (80$) or 2700+ (107$) since that board supports CPUs with 166MHz (333) FSB and save the rest of your money unless you would like to buy another 512MB stick of memory.

If you had a larger budget you could buy an A64 2800+ (185$) and chaintech board (80$).

You didn't believe what I told you in the other thread ;(.

the 512 is one stick of RAM and yes I have a 1900+

but really how many more FPS would I get out of more memory......

or on the other hand if I bought a new CPU ..how many more FPS ????

WOULD THIS CPU WORK BETTER THAN THE 2700+

Did you say "chaintech board" because I hate Intel chips ( no offence )

Slightly, yes. Link
It's up to you for the cost.
A 2700+ and 1gb memory would probably run faster more often than a 3000+ and your current 512mb memory for today and tomorrows DX9 games.

You wouldn't get too much out of more memory, I think 512 is fine for now. You should get an XP 2500+ and if you can a 9800 pro would run the game at max settings. You have $220 now, so minus $80 for the 2500+ you have $140. Then if you sell your 9600 pro you've got the money for a 9800 pro.

Adding more memory helps more than upgrading the CPU a model or two.

A 9800Pro would be great if you could work that into the equation. You would need the 2500+ to really see a big boost.

But what would be more important: CPU or RAM? His 9600 pro is ok for now, although I think he should get a 9800 pro to run HL2 at it's best, but he would have to upgrade the CPU because the one he has now would bottleneck a 9800 pro. How about spending $80 on the 2500+, then he'll have $140. By selling/trading in his 9600 pro and then getting the 9800 pro, he'll have money left over. The 9800 pro is only about $200, and I would think he can get a little more than $60 out of his 9600 pro. Then the extra money could be used towards another 512 stick.

Here is what im going to do (hopefully), Buy the barton CPU 3000 + ...sell my card for about 75 bucks to a friend.....that will leave me with about 150 bucks....save a little more money (before hl2 comes out) and buy THIS CARD (tell me if that one is good) ?? ....and play HL2 at full everything and good FPS ( I HOPE ) ???

and later on buy a 512 stick of RAM

Will that all work out ....even the running HL2 at full everything with new specs of:

SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800 PRO
521 RAM
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ "Barton"
ASROCK K7S8X SiS 746FX motherboard
