North Korea Unleashes a New Weapon: Cheerleaders

AEGU, South Korea, Aug. 23 — Just days before South Korea is to stand shoulder to shoulder with the United States in talks over North Korea's nuclear program, South Korean television is gripped by North Korea fever, with 500 North Korean athletes and cheerleaders coming for the World University Games.


"We are one, we are one," one network flashed as it televised hundreds of athletes from North and South Korea marching together, waving blue and white "unification flags." At games with North Korean players, tickets are selling out fast.

"I saw North Koreans for the first time, really, really," Kim Hu Jung, a 10-year-old girl, said today, jumping up and down with the excitement.

The cheerleaders dispense their smiles politically. At Thursday night's opening ceremonies, they halted cheering when the American and Japanese delegations arrived.

North Korea's charm offensive comes as it prepares for nuclear talks in Beijing on Wednesday with South Korea, China, Russia, Japan and the United States. Appealing to South Koreans' desire for unification, the top Olympic officials of both Koreas said on Wednesday that they would field a unified team next year at the Summer Olympics in Athens.

"Their message is that the Korean nation is one," said Douglas Shin, a Korean-American human-rights advocate. "Between the lines, the message is, `We are not going to develop nukes to attack you.' "

Polls indicate that South Koreans are far less concerned about North Korea's nuclear program than about the South Korean economy, which has fallen into a recession.

With security preventing significant contact, some conservative groups sent paper airplanes with invitations to the cheerleaders.

"Our papers say, `Come talk with us, have a cup of coffee with us, come walk in the park with us,' " said Kang In Ku, organizer of a group called Young Patriots. It is unclear what success the group will have with its come-on line: "Stop being concubines of Kim Jong Il. Come to the arms of freedom."
 
Well, until we find oil/gold/anyhting else the bush family owns, we won't have to worry about theUS going to war with them :p
 
Its about damn time we had ourselves a nuclear war. I wonder what North Koreas first target would be... South Korea? Japan? U.S.? Or would good old bushy march in and conduct a pre-emptive strike?
 
If N. Korea had the balls to fire a nuke on the U.S. the whole country would be dead within a few minutes.

im from texas and im a major bush fan(though i think hes dumb i think hes trying his best...well make that reallly really dumb) maybe im biased cuz i have a pic of him and me when he was the gov and he autographed it
 
hes def. not bushes type. now if you said perot and bush maybe but i dont know if bush goes for the independent i would think of that more as a one-night stand

Yeah that means a lot coming from a 12 year old anti-american who probably doesn't even know what america looks like, let alone anything about it's politics.
 
^ That may very well be true. But I have to say that I feel even for his personal issues, Bill Clinton was 100 times the president that Bush is, and its a shame his 2 terms were up.

You guys are funny. Noones gonna die. So they want to do some testing, US won't let them. I don't think anyone is stupid enough to nuke America or any other country for that matter.
