The graphical mastery that is taking place in HL2 is apparent, I find them better than Doom3. To say that Doom3 was beautiful is true, however Doom3 does not look as real as HL2. This difference of course is in the style of game though, so I digress.

What I do love is that the sound is perfect in this game. It is accurately distorted over distance. Echos play well and if a gun goes off in the distance, its not just a quiet gun shot, its true to life in that its the echo of gun fire with a more prominent POP. Anyone who shoots, or watches gunfire via news, can clearly spot this sound. Just a nod to those who developed the sound!

Sounds are indeed great. Only gripe I have is that sometimes you get overlapping speech, like Breen rambling on through a speaker (very inaudibly) and some NPC talking to you. The Combine is also hard to understand. Subtitles are a must.

I agree! I love the attention to detail with the sounds. Everything sounds as it should. I love hearing a distant pop of an explosion or the rattling of a machine gun. And the guns, wow. They really hit hard. It's all very cool.

The first time I heard the echoing of a gun... I just jaw-dropped. It was incredible. Same with the popping of a distant gun. So awesome.

I really liked the effect of gunshots coming through a CCTV link, as seen in certain levels..
It doesnt get quieter, it actually gets more of a tinny noise to it

The combine is SUPPOSED to be hard to understand. They are wearing freakin gas masks dude. :)

Indeed the sounds are great, what I've noticed is that if you have a large explosion close by, for a bit the other sounds are muffled. Like going partially deaf...so nice

I noticed that as well. Very nice little touch.
