The credit crunch hits EVE!

Space trading game Eve Online has suffered a virtual version of the credit crunch.

One of the game's biggest financial institutions lost a significant chunk of its deposits as a huge theft started a run on the bank.

One of the bank's controllers stole about 200bn kredits and swapped them for real world cash of £3,115.

As news of the theft spread, many of the bank's customers rushed to remove their virtual cash.

Moar

This kind of thing happens about every 6 months in EVE it seems.

You can trade Eve money for real money?

So how does that work because I imagine that you can mine and discover stuff which you sell in game... so it's creating more virtual money than the amount of real money that's actually being put into it.

If every player traded their Eve money for real money, wouldn't the developers go bust? And does that make in-game items dynamically lower in price (as Eve money has a high value)?

Really interesting, I want to know moar!

(Not played Eve)

You can't officially sell EVE money for real money like he did. He probably used ebay or some such. It happens a bit, though I think less than in other MMOs

You can get money ingame from other players using a type of gamecard code which you have bought from the developers using real money.

Ha, take that bank! That's why I keep the money with me! :p

Then again, I only have about 300m, so a bank really isn't needed yet.

Were goons involved in this? The goonfleet does amusing things in Eve all the time, there was a thread about their greatest victory maybe six months ago.

I don't think the Goons were apart of this, but I know they recently kicked some major ass on a corp. Let's just say a lot of Goon Titan's appeared and whooped em.

Shit like this is part the reason that I'd play Eve, if I had to play an MMO.

Out of the genre it's definitely the best.

I've been playing since February, and haven't really payed for anything but the first month yet. Rest of the time was people going off my buddies.

On that note, anybody who thinks they may just try a month, let me know ;)

rofl, This is great!

Funny thing is, my corp mate knows the guy really well and even has him on msn!

He is going to ask him about it when he is next online!

Q: Is EVE secretly a program to train young professionals for a job in the financial world? The amount of fraud, embezzlement and other tomfoolery in this game is staggering.

I think the best thing about EVE is the stories like this about it, because playing the darn thing was miiiiiiighty boring. That said, I find almost all MMORPGs boring, so natch.

Anyway interesting stuff.

I love stories like this from EVE. The only story better than EVE financial schemes though, was the story of Mafia practices in the Sims Online.

Oh don't get me wrong, I really like stories like these. It is just that EVE seems to have more of 'em than other MMO's.
