okay... a couple weeks ago Half-Life 2 would run beautifully.

Now the problem is it jumps horribly every couple of seconds, especially if there is a guy on screen. By jump I mean the action will pause, the sound does the whole broken record thing (repeats same sound over and over) and the FPS drop to around 3 FROM 130+(by the way how do I get the stupid FPS display thing off of my screen on the top? )

I'm really really confused about this problem because there doesnt seem to be anything that I could have done between now and then that could cause it. My Doom III, and Far Cry still run beautifully.

The only things that I've done that I would think (it would surprise me but it's all i got) could have caused it are these. #1 - I installed the HD pack for HL2 (higher res face textures, new soundtrack) But Ive run the game since installing that, and it ran perfectly. Didn't even have to change any settings for it. #2 - I installed a Mac OS skin from here. It does everything for you (changes the system icon files so that everything looks like a mac) It looks really good, but doesnt take system rescources, because it overwrites what the origional layout looks like for XP. but it doesn't seem like it would be a problem to me becasue my other games work, and it's not changing anything important, just the layout of windows.

Anyways, Any help would be Hot. Any of you guys have this problem before?

well to get that fps thing off in the console type:
cl_showfps 0

One of the recent patches set configuration settings to there default. There are a few settings that you can change to resolve some the stuttering..I don't know them off hand..somebody around here will though.

btw where did you get that Mac Os skin?

mac os skin

its really neat... because back in the day i used to be all into customizing my desktop, but it was very time consuming b/c you had to go through and change all your system files (unless you wanted to run another program that hogged system rescources) well this thing on that website does all that for you in about 5 minutes and it is very thorough. Your PC will look just like a mac after it's done, and wont take any more rescources than it normally would.

In all probability its the high res texture pack.

Are the minimize/close/restore buttons on the left or right top hand corner?

its a common resolved problem
my first run through of hl2 back in the day was beautiful
on replays the sound stutters occasionally and you have to wait a few seonds after a level loads for the frame stuttering to end
other than that valve have released various updates to minimise the issue but it is one that will not go away on current technology

anything non apple related that does the same do you know?

Mine slow too...Steam update problem?

I played the whole game and finished earlier in the year. It played quite well then on my ATI AIW 9800Pro. I upgraded my video card to an ATI AIW X800 XT and thought I would try the game again to see how it looked at higher settings. I did this with a bunch of my other games and they all play really nice at 1600x1200 with all settings on high. I even played Doom 3 and COD 2 Demo with all settings on high at 1600 with no problems at all. Now HL2 seems to pause or hesitate (although slight) from time to time. It never noticed this before. It does not matter if I have it on the highest settings or on the lowest settings. It seems to do the same thing. Anyone else notice this?

You need more RAM. It could also be the hard drive.

I have 1gig of ram and 1 80gig seagate HD at 7200rpm + 1 200gig seagate @ 7200rpm

but it worked fine for a while even with the high res pack (As in probably 5 or 6 more times... steam was in offline mode)

Do you have a nVidia card?

yup, GForce 6800

they are on the right side (same as in XP... one of the few minute differences. It even installs the ability to right click on your folders and and change the color of them, color code :P)

not that I know of sorry.

I know that this problem has been "solved" by valve before... but this problem just cropped up maybe a week ago. It's very confusing.

It coulc also be spyware or a virus making it lagg. It depends on what type of "HD pack" you got check what the Requirements are and see if your ram and or you video card can hold.

Other problems could be if on the internet it could just be laggy and the is not much to do about that just getting a better internet system or you could try going to task manager- processes - and them hl2dm(or something like that) and make it's prioroty to realtime

Help please

Yeah man, whats the deal.
Since the 23/9 update its the same for me, I hope they are working on it, I've never had a problem with HL:2 before.

hmmm, it looks like a few other people are having a similar problem I am having. Anyone hear anything from valve about this issue? Is there anyway to rollback the patch (w/o a reinstall)?

I may have found a solution to all of our problems :D

steam powered support

Not a confirmed solution, but I'm going through the steps right now

it looks like for those of us with nVidia cards we have a new driver patch to DL

:frown: the answer they have on steam sucks! I installed the nVidia drivers, which seemed to 'help' the problem a little, but it is still definately there! The other 'solutions' are crap.

I want to know, is there anyway to roll back the patch. this is ridiculous

no there isn't
trust me it has happened to just about everyone - only solution is to reformat which isn't worth it as the stuttering is only minor

Try emailing Valve directly with your problem. At least then you'll get an answer from a real person on the issue.

Give them all your specifications and all the exact details on whats happening

I sent a problem report to steampowered a week and a half ago and I have not heard anything yet. It would be nice just to hear that they got my message and will look into it. I got nothing and the number of posts and topics on this problem continues to grow.

Its just the crap way source games load sounds. They load them on the fly. The first time something happens that makes a new sound in game, the sound will be loaded from your hd and the game will stutter while this happens.
Also if you alt tab out and into the game, or a new map loads or whatever, all the sounds will need to be loaded again for some annoying, retarded reason.
In my experience anyway..
Defragging your hd will help.

Hey dugweb, try updating your video driver, and after mabey your sound driver.

I am sure he has tried that. I know that HL2 was running fine on Catalyst 4.12. After the steam update I tried all sorts of tweaks with no help. I updated my vid drivers to 5.9 then 5.10 and the same problem. I have also updated my Audigy 2 drivers and made sure my MB drivers and BIOS were up to date. I have the latest for everything in my system and it did not help at all. I wish that Valve/Steam didn't make the change they did. It looks the same, it just plays poorly now.

Writing to Steampowered seems to do no good. It is going on 2 weeks without a reply from them about the issue. Now that is tech support....just ignore them and they will go away. Really....if they ignore the issue I will go away and not buy there products again. I can only hope they are too busy wrting to ALL the people that are complaining about the problem and fixing it. Yea right....wake up your dreaming!

As has already been posted, Valve are aware of the problem and are looking into it.

Have you got anything overclocked? Is any of your stuff overheating or too dusty?

no overclocking, clean comp... latest drivers

it should work... but it doesnt :(

I'm having the same problem

I'm having the same problem. I only really play CS:Source and before about two weeks ago it was fine, really speedy.

Now it seems that when there are a lot of sounds happening the game slows to an un-playable speed for a second or so.

Usually this happens just as i'm in a fire fight. I have updated just about every driver I can possibly think of. Which has been no help.

I'm trying launching HL2.exe with -dxlevel 81 to see if this makes a difference.

My system specs are (briefly):

Athlon 2600+
1GB Ram
ATI Radeon 9600XT
Sound Blaster Audigy LS
Windows XP Pro.

Oh yeah, in game I also tried typing "snd_profile 1" into the console. When the game slows and stutters, you can see that the percentage of frame time that the sound is using, is huge.

it's Valve's fault

their engine is buggy, and not optimized
