YOU KNOW... the white screen!!!

I've noticed there are only like 3 topics about this. When you start Half-Life (i'm using hl1) or any mod, the screen will show up, but then the stupid screen will turn white and it'll freeze. The first time I tried to play it, it was white. Then i don't know what happened and it worked. Now it won't work anymore. If someone knows how to fix it, PLEASE TELL ME!

Are you using a firewall?

And have you tried validating?

No i'm not running a firewall, and nothing happened after the validation. God i'm pissed i just bought a new controller thats exactly like a PS2 one with rumble and everything, and now i can't use it. Just great...
edit: Can I check to see if i'm using a firewall? This is my mom's comp so I really don't know.

Is there anything called 'Norton' or 'Mcafee' or 'Security' or some phrase to do with security in general, in your taskbar tray (the little icons in the lower right corner of your screen)

Just "Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Enabled" and i don't think thats a firewall.
Oh and by the way just to mention, when I start Earth's Special Forces i can hear the music but the screen still becomes white. And it goes "Not Responding" like everything else.

Is Windows Firewall activated?

(You can check this by going to the Control Panel, and then going to the Security Center)

Windows firewall is off, but it doesnt work. There is something that says "Norton Internet Worm Protection is currently ON" under firewall, but i don't know how to turn that off.
Nvm i did it. i'm testing hl right now.

Really odd. If you've got Norton Internet Worm Protection, you probably also have Norton Internet Security (which is a firewall). Turn that off and then try, although I don't think it will have any effect :|

I did turn it off, nothing changed. Also it might help if mention that when it's in windowed mode it turns white, but in fullscreen it is black?

And this is my mom's computer (eek!) she's gonna get pissed at me.
Edit: Nevermind! I fixed everything, even HL! Woohoo! I put in the product recovery disc 2 and then restarted it and everything worked fine. Thanks for your help and time.
