Kuma War, the subscription based fps announces it'll feature John Kerry's Vietnam missions.

"The company says the details - complete with the fire of automatic weapons and the exploding of rocket-propelled grenades - are based on the Navy's records of an encounter on Feb. 28, 1969, for which a young Lieutenant Kerry was awarded the Silver Star. The game, scheduled to go online late this month, is primarily designed to be played from a digital Lieutenant Kerry's point of view, its creators say."

news of a Bush Vietnam mission surfaced but Kuma War scrapped the idea because they thought gamers would'nt enjoy a game where all you do ingame is get drunk with privileged frat boys, develop a coke habit, and get caught for DUI. :E

subtle politics at best ...I'm somewhat surprised they're making a Kerry mission because games tend to be non-political. What do you all think? Should games have a political or social agenda/awareness? Social awareness in games is a step towrds the legitimization of gaming as an art form ...without social issues/references/political ideas, games will remain at it's current stagnant level and will never reach the level of art form

I think its a great Idea, aslong as it doesnt boil down to manipulation, and lie's its all good.

here's an example of politics creeping into a game you'll recognise. Here's a funny pic

here's a Salon.com article on politics in gaming, specifically CS

hit the free pass button if it doesnt take you directly to the article

Wah. Never thought I'd see that happen; but really, is it any more different than playing Churchill (or more accurately one of his generals) in an WW2 RTS?

Well... yes. I mean, Kerry is alive and well and running to be the most powerful man on Earth. Hmm. They've probably included them simply to attract attention from the media rather than trying to make a political statement.

At least we don't see Saddam: Gassing your own Minions or Hitler: Ethnic Minorities? What Ethnic Minorities? ...

I'm with you 100%. All other art mediums address sociological and political issues and I don't see why games shouldn't either.
It's another thing they need to do for gaming to come into its own as a fully-fledged more mature medium, moving towards an art form.

Deus Ex showed some political awareness of certain ideologies (after all it did have some Socialist/Anarchist leanings to it) but then that was also dressed up in a tin foil hat.

There's already a major bestseller game that it's wildly based off George Bush.

it's called Grand Theft Auto : Vice City.

Why the hell would I want to be John Kerry? :p

You don't have to. From a bussiness point of view "you" don't exist. There is the market. And a percentage of the market wants to be John Kerry/ play Kuma War in Vietnam.

Ah... :|

Wow, these missions are going to be great. First, you scrape youself on the foot and demand a purple heart. Next, you return home after serving half a normal term in Vietnam. You go on to party with Jane Fonda and throw other people's medals away (not willing to part with your own). The game ends when you admit to being a war criminal and accusing the entire army of commiting the mistakes you did.

Oh and then we find out that CBS made this whole thing up and there wont really be any missions released at all!

No, his father who was a war hero in the Pacific. Shot down I believe. I'd like to see some sources on your wild accusation.

here ya go:

six days after Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt signed the Trading With the Enemy Act. By then, many companies that had been doing business with Hitler's war machine had stopped, though not Prescott Bush and the Union Banking Corporation. Toby Rogers, a controversial antagonist, writes "Prescott Bush continued with business as usual, aiding the Nazi invasion of Europe and supplying resources for weaponry that would eventually be turned on American solders in combat against Germany." On October 20, 1942, the U.S. government ordered the seizure of Nazi German banking operations in New York City.
Prescott Bush's business interests seized under the Act in October and November 1942 included:

Union Banking Corporation (UBC) (for Thyssen and Brown Brothers-Harriman)
Holland-American Trading Corporation (with Harriman)
the Seamless Steel Equipment Corporation (with Harriman)
Silesian-American Corporation (with Walker)

also google "trading with the enemy act"

after shooting down twelve enemy fighters (i too believe). anyhow, no one plays kuma war (it sucks). sad attempt to get coverage on their flopping game.

They should make a G.W. Bush mission where you dodge active duty in Vietnam by joining the National Guard... Then you can come up with excuses to skip routine medical exams and leave your position a year early... Then your family and friends can hook you with a stream of companies that you can bankrupt... then your family and friends can give you the US Presidency!

I smell a GOTY.

How dare you insult the proud members of the National Guard by implying it served simply to allow people to "dodge the draft."

I find that highly offensive.

Vietcong: blew.

Now we get "play as jesus kerry always smiling while killing people in nam" whatever the homo game is going to be... It's going to suck.

I wonder if you get to throw some other guys medals at stuff...that could be his special attack. Throwing other peoples medals, his objective could be to get 3 purple hearts to get out of the war.

To be an accurate historical game, the objectives would HAVE to be that.

That isn't the case these days, but it is fairly common knowledge that people that didn't want to get sent to Vietnam joined the National Guard.

Since there isn't a draft anymore, volunteering for the National Guard is very honorable, especially considering how many of them are currently deployed in Iraq (thanks to Bush's faulty planning). However, young men eligible for the draft during Vietnam had several choices. I'll order them for you from most honorable to most uhm... yellow.

1. Volunteer for Active Duty armed forces.
2. Stick around and hope you wouldn't get picked for the draft.
3. Join the National Guard.
4. Move to Canada/Mexico.

So while G.W. didn't complete evade the draft by wimping out and moving to Canada, he did ensure that he wouldn't be leaving home ... as opposed to John Kerry to voluteered to go to Vietnam. Nobody can deny that distinction, no matter how much spin you put on it.

THAT was the point I was trying to make. Sorry you missed it.

You forgot about shooting your toe off(my moms friend did that, another cut his trigger finger off), cheating on physical exams(my geography teacher did this, and history teacher...) and changing your religion like certain boxers...

Right, right... I'm pretty sure its fairly obvious where on the list those go.
