Ok, I have a a god damn old computer: Pentium 3 533 mhz, geforce 2 mx 200 64 MB and 256 MB RAM.
So, today I was bored and decided to download the HL2 demo just for the sake of it. Then, hopeless, I open the game and WOW! It can actually run!!!!

It had a stable framerate of 10 fps and only crashed three times!!!

I took some pics, so you can see how bad can HL2 look.

Man, the source engine doesn't stop to amaze me!
 
Yeah, that is kinda shitty graphs. Upgrade your RAM, that should do the trick.
 
good god, how did that run? it looks like the old unreal or something...

Why bother upgrading the RAM in this POS anyway? I should buy a completely new computer, but there is no money...

yeah, with no shadows and 3D Sky disabled.
 
And RAM wouldn't do the trick either.. 256 is the minimum.. What he needs is a new CPU.

But yes, you want to buy an entirely new PC.

I'm not guessing, my lad. I know that he just wanted to tell us that his computer ran hl2, but there's nothing wrong with giving an advice, is there?

I have run the game on an even worse PC with a TNT2 M64 and it is in DX6 mode. Below minimum. I would hate to see it run on DX 5 or lower hardware.

It looks GOOD coming from a 533 MHZ CPU. My god, I could, technically, run this at my moms at her computer with decent FPS. Shitty graph though. Good to know.
 
seriously....time to start digging through my closet for some retro hl2 capable hardware

I can't wait until someone comes along with screenshots of the game running on their Commodore 64...
 
Depends how poor you are but finance companies in Australia offer loans for people on welfare even. High interest rates yes, but you will get a new pc and pay it off. So if you borrow say AU$800 u will probably pay $300 interest. Not really a smart thing to do but atleast paying it off is a must and you have a new pc at the end of 6 months loan term that YOU OWN. Might be a option for some.

You only live once and if your PC is your only source of entertainment why the hell not do it :)

DX5 is so old I can't even remember what games running it looked like. What did FF7 for PC use? Dx6?

but my CPU is 1.8 and my videocard 32 mb so how you think will run compared to that?
 
A tribute to how adaptive and well built the Half Life 2 engine is! Try running Doom 3 and i suspect your computer will melt into a plasticy pool.
 
AHHAHA thats worse than my friends and yet u can run it better than him.... CONGRATS :)
 
I ran it quite smoothly on my 1 ghz tablet pc. I think it has some sort of mobile gforce 4 32mb card, 512 ram though. Playing with a pen doesn't work though so I had to use the pointer nub when I didn't have a mouse around.
 
Look on the bright side... atleast you can still play it on a low-end PC at a frame rate of 5-9.
