Hey, I've been browsing through online shops for a new cpu & a mobo lately, and I've been reading reviews on hardocp and elsewhere trying to get an idea of what I want. I've been wondering if this cpu and this mobo are worth it:

P4 2.8E Prescott and the ABIT IC7-MAX3.

Why these two you ask? because it seems the Prescott can be oc'ed up to 3.2ghz on that mobo with stock cooling.

What do you guys think?

if your just wanting to oc then yeah. take into account your gcard and ram etc. also, do you want to change them in the future? if so, then get a mobo that will be usable in the future, so as not to have to spend money on a new cpu and mobo again.

tho that is a pretty sound combo.

Northwood can also OC up to 3.2GHz on stock cooling.
I personally wouldn't buy a Prescott.
If you have noticed the benchmarks you will see sometimes a 3.4GHz Prescott performs worse than a 3 or 3.2GHz Northwood in some games. If it so happens that the Prescott you get could even OC to 3.4GHz on stock cooling, the Northwood would still be a better buy. IMO

Not to mention that many Prescott owners have their temps in the 60's and even hitting 70C. The P4 throttles at that point, meaning it clocks down to lower the temp, and your performance.

asus ...you could (should) write a tech manual ...half of us would find it incomprehensible but others would find it useful ...is there some way of invoking you if I have an emergency computer problem? like chant "asus" 3 times or something? ;)

lol he is the computer expert on the forum..i think. he certainly knows his stuff...even if i hardly understood what he just said lol :)

Alright thanks for the advice fellas, I'm gonna keep looking.

I just benchmarked my current pc and I think it's time for an upgrade lol! I've had this P4 2.2 for two years now. In the second cpu test I hit a record low of 1FPS : [

Yeah I'm gonna upgrade

Even without overclocking, the Prescotts run extremely hot as it is. Definitely go with a Northwood.

anything over 45C idle scares the shit out of me.

Then you'd be scared with the majority of computers out there.

My P4 Prescott runs at about 40C idle...about 60C on high high workload (maybe less, Digidoc isn't always accurate)....and I would recommend you get a Chaintech 9JCS Zenith if you want to do overclocking...the Abit mobo is good, but it just cannot match the value in the Chaintech Zenith...that and the Abit MOBO is UGLY as hell
