Zero Punctuation: Saints Row 2

Seemed more like half a GTAIV review stapled onto half a Saints Row 2 review. Still good though.

Did it suddenly gain so much popularity that the site is slow as hell and won't load the video, or does a time-out completely?

Funy, but not on par with the last few weeks. It does make me want to rent this though. :O

Not working for me either. Video started playing then the website died. I'll just wait till later.

Bawls.

I haven't played both games, but it sounds like something I would agree with if I did.
So a cautious yay!

Worked. I would play that game he pitched. Sounds awesome.

Wow, i thought he would flame this..didnt know what kind of game this was. Sure as hell almost sold me on the game. lol

Do it. On my face.

Also, that supervillian game sounded ****ing awesome.

He needs to dump the piece of shit video embedder he's using and go back to the old one, it hasn't ****ing loaded for me since...I don't remember.

Edit: Saint's Row 2 is leagues better than GTA4, also, and I agree with every word Yahtzee said for once.

He could rename this review, "Zero Punctuation: Yatzeeh's taste is exactly the same as sheepo's"

I thought Saints Row 1 was better then GTA4.

I can't wait to play Saints Row 2, but I have to pay off some ...things.... first.

Haha sounds like a lot of fun. Will have to look into it :)

I agree with him on most of his points, although I enjoyed GTA IV as well, just for different reasons. Surprised he didn't mention how bloody similar it is to the first game, though. Same engine, same city (more or less), most of the same activities... still a fun formula, but they could have expanded on it a bit more.

There's a whole shitload of games he's gonna review soon, yaaaay

This wasn't bad, I liked the Riddler comparisons and the Supervillain GTA. Well, not GTA. But you know what I mean.

Yahtzee has never said a truer word.

Saint's Row is 'GTA'. GTA4 is what GTA used to be minus the sandbox fun and with extra boring crap added.

What do you mean? There is sandbox fun and the experience is enhanced by a great engine - what is the sandbox missing? Do you miss the planes?

What extra boring crap are you talking about? Anything other than the "hanging out with friends" routine (which I find an issue blown out of proportions anyway, as you do the 'missions' a few times if you want the perks it gives and you can decide NOT to do it and it won't really affect the game that much if you don't get the perks).

I think by "sandbox fun" he means anything outside of the main story. You pretty much have to make your own fun after those dry up...

Meh ... never disagreed with him more.

Saying Saints Row 2 is better than GTA IV is like saying one of those cheap DVD movies released around the time of a film with a similar name/premise is better than the original because it has more nudity. It's just a cheap imitative rip-off that has none of the finer qualities of the series its stealing from. To say that SR2 is a better game is just poor taste in my opinion, and says a lot about "gaming culture".

SR is too different from GTA4 to to be a rip off. SR rips off, and then expands upon, the GTA we had years and years ago. The reason there's space for this game is because, for better or worse, GTA has betrayed its sandbox roots in favour of a more structured single player experience.

When playing both games back to back it's obvious that GTA4 doesn't compare to SR2 (or the original for that matter) when it comes to spending 30 mins tearing round a city. There's less variety to the car chases and shootouts, and they aren't as numerous or as excitng. There's no denying that in terms of production value and technology GTA4 is leagues ahead, but it's also obvious that something's been lost in the move to realism. You only have to load up a muliplayer map in GTA and play 'co-op' against ai with a friend to see how much GTA4 fails in this regard. It just isn't much fun. Stick SR2 on and you'll both be laughing and trying out new stuff till the sun comes up.

I respect that point of view and I can imagine co-op actually having significant merit (I may even try it for that eventually).

It's just that I had such a bad experience with the first game. I really had a problem with the atrocious attempts at humor. The story was worthless and the gameplay didn't engage me either. There are plenty of games I don't care about or don't like ... but these factors coupled with the fact that it was riding on a far superior games coattails lead to a bit of irrational hatred.

GTA IV is just more my style of game, but I do understand why people would like this...
