Hahaha! All true. Good times with those games--some of the best ever. Glad to hear him gush positively about something. :D

And I actually had one of the fantasies he mentions just this morning while thinking about using The One Ring.

I liked the review. Though I have never played the game he made me laugh all the same.

WHAT?! Go play it NOW!
...

I haven't played it either, I'm just saying it before someone who has does.

Heh, "mecha Gandalf". I always have wondered what planet Thief takes place on...
I really loved the game, but I never got to the end. Getting-lost syndrome was the big problem for me, later in the game. Going ages without seeing anything but confusing corridors.
Still, the influence on other games so far down the road is real, especially Ravenholm in Half-life 2.

If only there were other good stealth games. I finished Chroncles of Riddick and liked it, but other then that not very much. Crysis is beyond my reach of course, so any recommendations for sneaky gamers?

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was alright. Same with Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, if a bit older and not quite as stealthy.

I own all three Thief games. I nearly completed Thief II before losing my saves, but I never got past the second level of Thief I (Zombies? **** that.) and I don't think I got further than the tutorial in Thief III.

Good games, but they can easily turn repetitive or just plain dull.

You must have already played it, but Deus Ex? Warren Spector started working on Thief: The Dark Project and the Thief series ultimately ended up with him at Ion Storm, so there's even a genealogical link to the game. Deus Ex is a much more versatile action game, with no Thieving, but you have to play as a sneaky character at least once.

You have to? Sorry Kups, but the MJ12 lab is also suited to the action crowd.

That's why you get the Bullet Protection biomod on Lebedev's 747.

It's a very easy series of games to get hold of. Oookly Spookly shadows is on Steam and Gametap and second hand copies can be found for pocket change on Amazon. Worth a look, though perhaps try the demos first.

"Have to" as in "You must experience it this way".

Seems I always experienced it the wrong way.

1. Break out
2. Knife the guy to death
3. Get to the armory
4. Slaughter anyone and anything that stands in your way and doesn't start running away the moment it sees you.

It's Deus Ex, there is no wrong way!

Though broadly, there's the easy way where your brother furrows his brow and gets you pacifist Christmas gifts or there's the hard way where you pretend the stealth matters a little more than it does and you clear the levels of enemies and dump their unconscious bodies in the same air vent.

There's also the way where you say 'screw these unambiguously evil MJ12 guys shooting at me, I've abandoned my ethics because this sword is just too funky', which is usually what happens every time I ever replay the game.

That's just easier yeah. It's perfectly possible to stealth your way through MJ12.

It's just much more satisfying to murder everyone.

I usually went through the game knocking out NSF and UNATCO troops, slaughtering everyone else that dared to fire at me.

Oh yes, Deux Ex, of course! I loved it a hell of a lot, but stealth/ pacifism only has an effect on the 1st level, Liberty island, right? Other places you can do whatever.

As for Splinter Cell, I've heard good things but it's 3rd-person, and you only have one chance or something, right? Maybe I could give it a try...
