zone-alarm and CS:S

hey!!

is there a problem with running zonealarm and CS:S?
i have heard rumours that it causes lag and other problems.
i'm running ZA and i am experiencing short durations where everything just stops and i appear somewhere else.
sort of extended lag. ping ranges from 60 to 200.

is there a more compatible firewall for CS:S that is free?
hope somebody can help.

hmm i heard that is meant to be really crap.
and i guess it must be if most people would rather pay for other ones.
i don't know anyone who uses it.

I use windows firewall. :|
I also use NOD32 though (extremely good anti-virus/anti-malware software).
I'm also behind doubled routers as well.


EDIT: I did, at one time use ZoneAlarm though, until I found out the reason I lagged was due to little memory available and around half of it being used without any games running. :|

EDIT2: If you're commonly joining servers where you get over 100 ping in the server list, that could be part of the reason for a raised ping.

I use Agnitum Outpost (you want the free one). I would have said that it was perfect, except that a while back it got this habit of crashing very fishily. I think this may be caused by some kind of conflict with other programs I have running. However when it crashes I just start it back up again and it's ok (although it can weigh on my mind when I'm afk).

I would recommend it. It may not crash at all for you (didn't start doing it until weeks after install for me) and if it doesn't it's great.

edit - just thought I'd add that ZA is well known to cause a lot of problems for some people. I had it not too long ago and it started giving me blue screens whenever I connected to the net, and not even disabling it got rid of the bug. Personally I would always look for an alternative.

I also found that zonealarm started causing lag at some point just over a year ago, so I stopped using it.
