Zoom in / out

I dont know if you noticed it, but in the movies Gordon is always zooming in and zooming out - not with his scoped weapon, but with his eyes..

(i dont know if i explain very well ^^ - but look at the 3rd video; it's always zooming..)

do you think it's a gameplay feature, it is scriped ( :x ), or it's just a modification from valve for the E3 show ?

Yea I noticed this too, it can't be a modification from the e3 show if its direct feed though. I have a feeling its a mouse 2 option or something, just like if u had a weapon in your hand and you zoom but its just with your eyes.

It must be one of the features within the demo editor that's built into the source engine.

It pretty much only happens when he specifically points directly at Alyx (his crosshair if it were there would be on her) so perhaps it's a built in feature to zoom in on friendly characters when they are speaking so you can get in closer to see all the intricate facial details and the eyes and the lip movement better.

i think it would be annoying if it zoom in only with friends.. :/

You want it to zoom on enemies while you're trying to shoot them all too so you can look into their eyes as they die?

You probably can't zoom in in-game without a gun though. That would be weird... zooming eyes...

...i don't wanna look into my friends eyes while they're talking to me...it's not useful i think...

And just for realism ! Why couldn't you zoom in on your ennemies, whereas you could zoom on your friends ?

I'm saying it's automatic when you're near a friendly character talking and you 'aim' at them. If you're aiming at an enemy, you're not aiming at them to listen to them and watch their expressions. You can still zoom with a gun at the enemies to shoot them. Perhaps if you're captured and have to listen to an enemy then it would zoom on them while they talk, but not in combat, that's absolutely useless.

I don't like automatisms :)
And if, while a friend is talking to you, you're looking the ground...?
Because if you forced to look at them (script) while they're talking...

I think the zooming is actually suppose to represent Gordon focusing. A "focus zoom", if you will.

Anyone notice the awesome "Widescreen" type zoom when Gordon was fighting the Strider with his rifle in the E3 Non direct feed video? I think that looks great how they had it fade out with the gradient.

Read what I'm suggesting. My thoughts have stated that it will zoom in so you can see their facial features WHEN YOU AIM AT THEM. Aim at the floor and you'll be looking normally, go wander around for all I care, but READ WHAT I TYPE.

I read, i don't understand everything, but i read :)
Hum...ok, my fault, but i think it's just for the E3...

More than likely it's a camera option in HLTV. Something to e-mail Gabe about.

I believe this is how it works- but I'm still not sure whether they'll implement it in-game, or just for the demo. It would make sense for moments when character/speech interaction is more important than anything going on in the environment. To do this well, it would have to 'unzoom' when something else in the environment breaks Gordon's focus on the character who is speaking. This is implemented pretty well in the Kleiner video when you're listening to Alyx, then Kleiner says something, and the view pans out.

In fact it's done so well and subtly that most people don't even notice the zooming the first few times they watch it, so I think they'll leave it in the game.

I think zooming in was only for the purposes of the demo. I think they just wanted to show off the facial expressions that Alyx is capable of.

Imagine a friend is speaking, you zoom in, and every seconds you look at something else, then you return on the friend, a lot of times...zoom in, zoom out, zoom in, zoom out...:/

thanks DelaZ who mailed Gabe about this !

and this is a gameplay feature !!! that rocks :D

Im pretty sure its not automatic, you probably work the feature using the mousewheel. Your crossairs probably act like a targeting feature so that any object or entity its on is targeted, then you use the mousewheel to "focus" or "zoom in" on it.

Nonsense, I would expect this zoom feature to be something simply added to show off the characters better for the sake of the demo - notice is doesnt happen before the tentacle attacks the combine soldier.

Valve has stated time and time again that they hate anything "automatic"...anything that pulls you out of the game bacause you basically lose control of the charecter (however slightly)

But its also a demo and that specific demo is meant to showcase charecter emotions...so it makes good sense to zoom in on her emotions...I seriously doubt it will be implemeted in actual gameplay.
