This thread is designed to outline some of the postive aspects of the PS3 rather than bashing it to pieces. Every console has it's positive points but with all the fuss going about the PS3, there are some things people miss that are good about it. Lets look at some:

1. Backwards compatibility - over 4000 titles to choose from the Playstation library. Unlike the XBOX 360, where you have to wait until Microsoft finishes emulating the software for old games, the PS3 will play almost every game that was ever made for the playstation and PS2. Sony has not revealed if the games will be upscaled, but 480p should be effecient enough. You don't need 1080p on a PS2 or PS1 game.

2. Cell chip reliability - The Cell chip in the PS3 is pretty much the most powerful CPU in a console today (and most home computers). Gamespot recently played a demo of Call of duty 3 on the PS3 and said that it ran without any slowdown whatsoever. The Xbox 360 had some slow down issues.

The game sure did look good, though. It didn't look qualitatively better than the Xbox 360 version we've spent a lot of time with, though we noted the frame rate was consistent throughout our entire demo. That's because the many cores of the PS3's Cell processor are handling different parts of the game discretely, which apparently gives the developers more breathing room to implement various visual and aural effects without worrying about dragging down the frame rate too much.

Also, developers get a break when it comes to programing. The PS2 was tough to program for because they didn't have access to the common programming tools such as OpenGL or C++. With Playstation 3 however, they have access to these tools and more, so developers can accompish more of what they want, and in a reasonable time frame.

The industry-wide shift to multicore processing platforms will have a major impact on developers in the coming years. A lot of the burden will fall upon the hardware manufacturers themselves to design systems and provide tools that will make it easier for programmers to write games. Sony has announced that the PS3 will use Open GL/ES, a specialized API closely related to Open GL, and programmers will be able to access the Cell's SPEs using C or C++ tools, instead of having to program on the assembly level as they did with the PS2.

3. Free online gaming - With the PS3 you can play online multiplayer for free. With Xbox 360 you need to sign up for the Gold membership which costs around $50 US.

The free PlayStation Network service will include community features and online multiplayer gameplay. Resistance: Fall of Man, for example, will feature a 40-man online multiplayer mode and a robust lobby system with buddy lists, as well as support for parties, clans, stats, and persistent experience levels. Xbox Live Silver, Microsoft's free basic service, provides community options, too, but Silver-level subscribers can only play massively multiplayer games online. Players must upgrade to a paid Xbox Live Gold service subscription to access online multiplayer gameplay for non-MMO games.

Gamespot

Also with the online gaming function, the PS3 (60gig version) will have a built in Wi-Fi. You don't need to buy a seperate antenna to get wireless online gaming for the PS3.

4. Use of Flash memory (60gig version...not sure if on 20gig version)

The PS3 will have the ability to save games, demos and videos to Flash USB memory drives. The XBOX360 can read flash USB drives but can only view photos of them. The PS3 can read videos and save game data from the USB flash memory drives.

5. Out of the box Bluetooth wireless keyboard support - The PS3 can support everything bluetooth including keyboards. It can support headsets that use bluetooth. If you go to gamespot and watch the latest "On the spot", they show a bluetooth keyboard being used on the PS3. I am not sure if the system supports bluetooth mouses or not but keyboards are confirmed. The keyboard's primary function is for internet access.

You do realize this thread is going to turn people critizing the Ps3?

Now lets list all the negatives.

why dont you go ahead Raziaar?

I have nothing negative to say about PS3 exept the price...and the commercials.

What use serves this thread if we can't talk about the bad stuff? This thread is like a place where all the sony fanboys can come to talk about the wondermachine that is ps3 without having normal people telling them the truth.

Then post some negative stuff. No one is stopping you.

Price, lack of a good number of launch titles (FF and MGS...that's about it) shitty commercials

That's all I can think of

So your saying that while your playing a game you will think it sux because ur so mad at the commercials?

"DAMNIT, I KILLED THE BOSS AND FINISHED THE GAME BUT THE COMMERCIAL SUX SO NOW I WONT PLAY ANYMORE!!!"

Lets look at the bad things. Paying £50 to £60 for GT5, and then having to buy the tracks and cars as extras. F*** THAT.

1. Backwards compatibility - over 4000 titles to choose from the Playstation library. Sony has not revealed if the games will be upscaled, but 480p should be effecient enough. You don't need 1080p on a PS2 or PS1 game.

That would sound good, if it weren't because 98.75% of those 4000 titles suck.

If the games suck, I don't care how powerful the CPU is.

With Playstation 3 however, they have access to these tools and more, so developers can accompish more of what they want, and in a reasonable time frame.

Now those developers will create more generic, soulless games.

3. Free online gaming - With the PS3 you can play online multiplayer for free. With Xbox 360 you need to sign up for the Gold membership which costs around $50 US.

You can do the same with the Wii.

Also with the online gaming function, the PS3 (60gig version) will have a built in Wi-Fi. You don't need to buy a seperate antenna to get wireless online gaming for the PS3.

I don't need 60 gigs to be able to play games, or a hard drive, for that matter. The Wii also has built in Wi-Fi.

I already have a computer.

What's the difference between that and games on the XBOX 360? Perfect dark Zero requires you do buy new maps, Oblivion requires you to buy new quests and the expansion, PGR3 requires you to buy new cars. I don't see what so bad about buying things on the XBOX360, So why is it so bad for the PS3?

Obviously you are a sony basher and don't realize the quality of all consoles and systems so your opinion does not matter.

Obviously you are a sony basher and don't realize the quality of all consoles and systems so your opinion does not matter.

I am not a Sony basher. I buy whatever the best system out there is, and the PS3 isn't that system. Also, the opinion of fan boys like you doesn't count either.

if you mean final fantasy and metal gear solid, you're wrong cause they're not launch titles
look it up on IGN

So I posted some good things about the PS3 and now you think I'm a fanboy? You gotta stop assuming so much. The purpose of the thread was to outline some good things about the PS3, not a den for fanboys cause I hate fanboys. Plus if I was a fanboy why would I post it on this site and not a PS3 site? Try to open your mind a little.

Blu Ray player. One of the main reasons im getting it. Plus it has some good games im looking forward to.

Its going to be a good system. I know that. Most people know that.

The only downfall is the price for it, the price for extra controllers, other accessories, etc. So many people are not getting it just because of the price. If it were $400 or even $450 for the premium version, I know everyone in my area would get one.

That is one bad thing that is stopping EVERYONE from getting the PS3. The price.

End of discussion.

+100000000000x10^1000000000000000000 points for Shamrock.

  • Controllers - It's been over a decade. A DECADE. And Sony has yet to update the layout or the ergonomics of their controller.
  • Free, open online service - You might have to pay for games that aren't MMO. Also, the Xfire functionality is integrated into "some" games, according to Wikipedia. "Some" games is not good enough.
  • Price - The price is simply ludicrous.
  • Actual games library - Sure, you get 4000 PS2 games, but I guarantee you that there are not a whole lot of games that are worth your while. The only reason there are so many games is because the PS2 was so massively popular, so companies could afford to create and sell crummy games to such a wide audience.
  • Launch titles - The only one I'm even marginally interested in is MGS4.

I could continue, but I'm freezing cold here.

[edit] And MGS4 isn't even a launch title. Resistance: Fall of Man? Big, big, big "meh" from me.

Obviously I was correct about this thread.

Why the hell are people bashing the PS3 so much? It kinda makes me think one person did it first then everyone followed. Besides the price, I see no real reason to continually bash the system. And if you can afford a computer you can afford a PS3. People are hypocrites if they state "PS3 is to much for me!!!!!" and then they go out and buy a $700 dollar graphics card for their computer.

BECAUSE IT'S AN OVERPRICED PEICE OF SHIT MACHINE THAT SONY WILL SELL TO UNINFORMED JACKASSES THAT PLAY GTA AND MADDEN ALL DAY AND LOOK AT YOU PUZZLED WHEN YOU EVEN MENTION A PC GAME

Oh, and because it's the internet, nub

Haha! no no no...

You aren't required to buy new maps on PD0.
You aren't required to buy new quests on Oblivion.

You aren't required to buy anything extra for any 360 game if you don't want to.

GT5 you pretty much have to buy the cars. Sure it comes with 2 tracks and 30 cars... but no way can you call that a full game.

I'll get it when some insane game that won't be on my 360 will be released.

Oh, and when it's cheaper than what the 360 is today.

There's plenty to be excited about for the PS3. Perhaps listing it merits by making comparisons to the 360 isn't the best idea, though. Let's let the games do the talking.

It's the same with movies - always beware of the film that tries to sell itself as 'the best film since 'movie x' or, 'film y' meets 'film z' - these are always shite. A good flick (or games console) doesn't need to tread on others to be recognised.

1. Controllers - Why fix something that's not broken?

2. MMO games - Of course MMO games will cost money to play. They all do. I don't see why your complaining about that.

3. Price - Actually if you think about it, your getting one hell of a deal:

First off, a blu-ray player (an actual blu-ray player) costs more that $1200 US.

The cell chip costs around $800 US

And if you can afford a good Computer you can definatly afford a PS3.

4. Launch titles are not great....but I can definatly wait for MGS4.

That's what I mean. I know you aren't required to buy these things, but If you want more game variety, it's an option. And GT5 is completely overrated. That's one game I don't care for on the PS3, I'm more excited about MGS4 Devil may cry 4, FFXIII, most square enix games. PGR3 beats GT outright.

And just for people to know. I think the Wii will destroy the XBOX 360 and PS3. I will be buying a wii on launch date.

What was bothering me is the negativety directed towards the PS3. It confused me because, when the PS2 came out, people were more excitied than ever. I guess the reason why people are so mad at sony is because they copied the XBOX 360 and the Wii with their design and controller scheme for the PS3. Most people will stay away from the PS3 at first, but eventually it will grow.

For me, the PS3 is a 'meh' until it actually has something out that I want to play.

1. Controllers- The button placement is fine, but the thumbstick placement sucks cock. As far as controllers go, the 360 controller is perfect. Can't say much about the Wii, but it looks like it'll be easy and comfortable to use.

2. Online gaming- even if Sony says online service is free, it doesn't mean that game developers won't have a 'premium' service that will cost money. Nothing is ever free.

3. It's overly expensive. Don't try to justify the price. Period.

4. Games. So far, the only games that interest me on the PS3 is FFXIII. I could give a shit about MGS.

is it true that the PS3 wireless controllers cannot have their batteries replaced? You have to buy a new controller or get a warranty replacement?

is it true that the PS3 wireless controllers cannot have their batteries replaced? You have to buy a new controller or get a warranty replacement?

yep. That's one shitty thing. I hate the fact that I will have to get a new controller because the battery ran it's life...sony states it will last for many years, but who knows.

I also don't like how they didn't include rumble. Thankfully a seperate hardware developer may be putting rumble into future controllers.

1. Controllers - Why fix something that's not broken?
Because they could be a hell of a lot better. My old keyboard, for example, isn't broken, but it sure as hell sucks compared to my new one.

2. MMO games - Of course MMO games will cost money to play. They all do. I don't see why your complaining about that.
You misread, I said that you might have to pay for online service for specific games that AREN'T MMOs. It's an open system. You don't pay a flat access fee, but developers are free to charge whatever they want to for online access to their game.

3. Price - Actually if you think about it, your getting one hell of a deal:

And part of the reason that the cost is so exorbitantly high is because Sony is pushing an uber-HD media format on a market that is far, far away from adopting HD screens into the mainstream. The quality difference between DVD and HDDVD/Blu-Ray is simply not worth the cost right now. And as it stands, I don't care how expensive the Cell chip is, because if it can't perform as amazingly well as its cost implies, it's not worth it either.

Raziaar: Yep. :(

yep. That's one shitty thing. I hate the fact that I will have to get a new controller because the battery ran it's life...sony states it will last for many years, but who knows.
Yeah, and you can trust Sony when it comes to batteries. </sarcasm>

At least the controllers are small enough to throw out the window when they burst into flames.

Ya. Look at all the laptop batteries sony recalled. Sony lost hundreads of millions of dollars alone on those. If the PS3 does not sell, sony will be screwed.

and the shitty PSP....i was so freakin disapoinbted by the PSP ..

piece of shit..

I didn't read all 3 pages, just the original post.

#1 Who cares ? A couple of people do but th his is a next-gen console and I'm not buying it to play my old games. Also, I thought it wasn't even working yet and you had to jump through some hoops to play your old games ?

#2 If it does lag it's the fault of the developers as games which look a lot better don't have any slow downs (For example, GoW). Also, CoD3 is a 360 game [being ported] so I doubt it would have frame issues on 360 and not on PS3. Also, the Cell processor is unproved, the technical specs can be said to be worse for gaming, it causes production issues, price hikes, etc.

#3 The unnamed service looks subpar and Sony simply suck with anything online, especially game related. While free is good, you get what you pay for.

#4 Wow.. I'm so buying a PS3 now ! OMGOMGOMGWHATAREASON. :|

#5 And how do I, as a gamer, benefit from this ? I don't and it's basically a gimmick / a feature that will see extremely little use.

Real/good reasons, please.

The games will be what draws people in. That would be a positive you should really try to point out. It shouldn't be the specs. Just look at those who buy a Wii only for Zelda or an Xbox360 for GoW. ;)

Why backwards compatibility may not be so good:
All the games worth playing are ALREADY owned by PS3 owners, who probably already have a PS2/1. Unlike the backwards compatibility of Wii, which also spans their past competitor SEGA, PS past games have less value on the PS3.

Why Blu-Ray / HD is over-rated:
First off, the % of households with HDTV's are still low. Backwards games, as you've noted, are little affected. There is no value with Blu-Ray at a discount price UNTIL it has proven to be a lasting format. What Sony doing instead is quite contrary (and logical), unstable format at discount price.

Why Quality of Games is limited:
This was supposed to be the saving grace of PS3, but so far only MGS and FFXIII has attracted attention. The market for racing/sports games that are plentiful is low compared to RPG/action, and titles such as Assassin's Creed, CoD, and GTAIV can now be found on the X360.

Why it simply isn't worth the price as of 2006 to mid-2007:
$600, counting inflation and rise of tech, is still too expensive for a console given its limited game library. Until better games come out, and until programmers can FULLY utitlize the Cell (using all the cores as opposed to 2-3), $600 for a)few good games, b)features over half the households can not even see, c)unproven format discounted for market saturation, is too much.
The price WILL go down by this time next year, there are few advantages I see getting it now. Already there are manufacturers that are making HD-DVD/Blu-Ray players in one. No one needs two Blu-Ray players, yet.

Why don't you take your own advice and open your own mind a little bit too? I posted some bad things about the PS3 and now you think I'm a Sony basher? You gotta stop assuming so much.

Ok I have 1 bad thing to say about the Wii. Only one bad thing. The Wiimote requires two AA batteries. That means you better run to the store and buy Nihm batteries and a Nihm battery charger if you don't have one already.

At least the Wiimote has batteries that you can replace by yourself. And please learn to use the Edit button instead of double posting.
