The Combine probably destroyed the, say, ten largest cities in the world. That way they had the largest chance of taking our defenses out, while confusing and panicking us.

That means the world woul have been struck in this order;

Bombay > Shanghai > Sao Paolo > Seoul > Moscow > Dehli > Karachi > Istanbul > Beijing > Mexico City

None of those are in America.

After that, America and Russia would probably fire nuclear bombs on the Citadels. We have no idea of knowing how that went, but we can assume the largest cities (save for Moscow) were destroyed in those countries.

It's unclear after that.

As I said in a similar thread yesterday, one of the few facts we have about the Combine's coming is that they stopped by and attacked the UN building in New York. The cityscape is still standing behind it. The fact this image is in a newspaper heightens the possibility that the person who took it survived to send it and thus the city survived intact. Also, the entire Black Mesa crew, Alyx, Judith, and... well, every NPC except Cubbage and Grigori, came from the United States. Unless they ALL ferried over before the 7 hours war, they must have relocated from the United States under combine rule. They seem rather too numerous to safely assume that their homes were destroyed and they were forced to move: the combine likes moving people around to alienate them from their surroundings.

Also, I don't see how 'human obliteration' is either a valid battle strategy, or was ever the intention of the Combine. If an alien race attacks at 1000 hours with the intention of destroying the entire human race, they don't get to 1700 hours and decide that actually, they could afford to halt the attack and stay awhile playing the enslavement game. The Combine just wanted the earth to surrender: obliterating every last American. Furthermore, such a racial genocide would probably have been mentioned by the game at some point. You don't lose a world power of 300 million people and forget to mention it in an English Language newspaper either.

One thing I just noticed: "7 Hour War Ends in Combine Victory". Not once does the newspaper apparently even explain who the hell the Combine are. Perhaps the Combine didn't attack as suddenly as RtB said, and in fact, humanity knew who the combine were before the war?

Lets face facts, Combine own us. The World was defeated in less than 7 hours, and were, for the most part...anihilated. We stood no chance, there's no point in dragging it any longer. What is there really to say?

Also 'The Combine' sent the survivors of the 7 hours war and relocated them in parts of Russia; One of them being City-17 and City-14.

I will repeat my statement that I always use when someone brings this up; That is because you have your steam language set to english. For complete eastern european authenticity, switch your steam language setting to russian, now.

No way to know, not entirely. I'd have to guess that:
1. BMRF was in America, and ergo lots of portal storms would have occurred. Also, the combine, who are (to mye understanding) looking for the key to teleportation and so there is probably also lots of Combine activity in the states.
2. The nuke (which suggestively... SPOILER... goes off at the end of Op4) would have probably caused lots of fallout and radiation. Not too bad for the Xenians who have settled in America, but the people would probably have some problems with it.

Obviously, everyone in city 17 isnt speaking english, they're actually speaking eastern european obviously, the only reason they speak english in the game is so we, the gamers, can understand what they are saying, obviously. Really, the only american people are the ones from black mesa etc, everyone else is eastern european, obviously. This explains why gordon doesnt speak back to any of them, because he doesnt speak eastern european...obviously.

So does that mean Barney, Kleiner, and Eli still have American accents (since they were obviously in America because that's where HL1 took place),, but the average citizen on the street doesn't? In that case, yes, I'll say they majority populace is meant to be of Eastern European descent and not American.

I think Italy has mesas too. Although another argument towards America is that a facility the size of Black Mesa would undoubtedly have some local hires if just for janitors or security guards or something. I recall only the American accents again (on personnel and the military).
