It's that time of the year again, where people spend lots of money then set fire to it.

What are you planning tonight?

I've just bought a load of fireworks, so I plan to set fire to them soon. Invited some mates round so should be a laugh.

There was some bonfire a week ago or something, don't really know wtf its for but whatever. I played games.

Too many damn americans on this site :P

Wiki said:
Guy Fawkes Night (more commonly known as Bonfire Night) is an annual celebration on the evening of the 5th of November. It celebrates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of the 5th of November 1605 in which a number of Roman Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

It is primarily marked in the United Kingdom, but also in former British colonies including New Zealand, parts of Canada, and parts of the British Caribbean.[citation needed] Bonfire Night was also common in Australia until the 1980s[citation needed], but it was held on the Queen's Birthday long weekend in June.

Festivities are centred around the use of fireworks and the lighting of bonfires.

wut?

Never heard of this.

*sigh*

It's V for Vendetta-day, get it now?

Funny thing: Few years back some MP had firecrackers put into her mailbox. The next day she complained about it, saying that blowing up members of Parliament isn't the spirit of Bonfire night...

There's a bonfire in Cambridge somewhere. Plan on going to that. Might get fed.

oh crap, didnt even think about this, def. watching V for Vendetta later tonight

Remember, Remember
The fifth of November,
The gunpowder treason and plot.
I know of no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot

1 Year from now I will get all of you to protest this site, we will all have the same user name and at one point I will blow up the politics forums.

This sick celebration of state murder absolutely disgusting in today's day and age.

Watching the fireworks in the park opposite my house... from my house!

Meh we have our bonfires on Halloween, or rather the teens do and young kids who make them.

Attempted murder...it never went ahead. But yes fireworks night is great, can't wait to see the displays tonight. Boooooom. I can't believe there is no dedicated fireworks night in America D:

Roman Catholic something...kinda lost interest after that.

Isn't this the time they burn things to remember the traitor who tried to blow up the king or something?

*sigh*

Sadly, I was trying to explain what Guy Fawkes day is to some people in my class today, and I said

"well, you've seen V for Vendetta, right?"

"Yep!"

"Well, that's kind of what that entire movie was about, or at least based on"

"oh...well, I didn't like that movie very much, if that helps you."

;(

You can take back that sigh, because I meant the "bonfire day" thing. I knew who Guy Fawkes was and what he did even before that (sweet)movie. I just never knew that there was a bonfire night to celebrate his failure at blowing things up.

Kind of fitting, then, that the celebration involves lots of explosions.

His desires live on in those who still remember remember the fifth of November.

Sigh.... get your facts right! We're celebrating the fact that the catholics FAILED to blow up parliment and kill the then protestant king james the 1st! Not the other way around :/

And yay for religion causing conflict way back then aswell as in modern times

All the fireworks and bonfires happened mainly over the weekend here. I'm not excited by them anymore, since after watching News 24 channels I expect anti-aircraft fire and bombs, which are far more exciting.

I've never got Guy Fawkes night.

Is it a celebration that he failed, or a celebration that someone should try to attempt to destroy the government of Tyranny.

Since I've been young, it's always felt like the latter.

kirovman its original 17th century incarnation is definitely the former. Reading wikipedia has turned up something i never knew about the guy fawkes rhyme.

The Rhyme
Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up King and Parliament.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!

However this verse was part of the rhyme back in the 17th century but is no longer cited for obvious reasons...
A penny loaf to feed the Pope
A farthing o' cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down.
A fa ggot of sticks to burn him. [fa ggot here means a bundle of sticks as thats what the original word meant and im just using a space between a and g to get around the filter for this reason]
Burn him in a tub of tar.
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head.
Then we'll say ol' Pope is dead.
Hip hip hoorah!
Hip hip hoorah hoorah!

Not seen V for Vendetta.

But I always thought the rhyme would sound better:

Remember, remember the 5th of November,
Gunpowder, Treacle and Pot.
