Seriously though I don't watch that show but I have to say that was pretty good.
 
It's a good voice, sure, but the audience's reaction was over-the-top.

I think it's so stupid that some people were like... wow, this women doesn't have the looks, she's going to be terrible!

And Simon is full of bullshit, expecting something great from her. We all know he's an asshole and was expecting her to suck just like the rest of them.

I think it was more the fact that she was kind of old (I guess compared to other people who appear on the show? I wouldn't know), and that she had aspirations of being famous like... whoever that famous person she named was. Plus, yeah, she doesn't really look the part. Personally I was completely expecting her to fail, so it really floored me.

As to what Simon said, he only said he expected something "extraordinary." He could have meant extraordinarily bad. :P

I can never tell with simon man. I haven't watched the show often enough to know his nuances, but I do know he always comes off as a douche bag.

Heh... well, I guess.

But I mean, singers get old all the time. Opera singers and stuff can often be older and still have great voices really. I don't really think singing declines with age until you develop serious problems. I've heard some old ass geezers sing very melodically. I mean look at Dominic Chianese, Uncle Junior from the Sopranos... he's a great singer and he's an old ****. lol

And yes, sappy over the top audience reactions with equally melodramatic close up shots and jazz are a staple of this show.
 
I did expect someone to cry with the reactions they were giving.
 
this whole story is kinda bad/sad ..not because of the woman but rather it shows how shallow we all are ..I mean they keep saying "we didnt expect someone who looked like you ..". they expected her to sound like shit based on her apprearance alone. when she walked on the stage I thought damn she's ugly but didnt think to myself "oh man she's gonna be really really bad" ...well that's what the audience/judges all thought. And even after the fact they still continue to act as if it's a miracle that someone so ugly could actually posess some sort of talent that wasnt related to ringing a bell or hiding under a bridge. really the truely ugly people were sitting in the judges chairs, in the audience and watching on their tvs not on the stage :arms:

also, i agree with stern. That's all i thought when they went from laughing at her to praising her. It's like if she wasn't a good singer she'd be trash or something. God forbid somebody who wasn't born flawlessly gets famous. They did the same with paul potts. The woman judge (forget her name) said something along the lines of "we have a lump of coal who is going to turn into a diamond". In other words, "if it wasnt for your voice you would be a nobody you piece of shit, die of aids"

I have a hard time believing Simon didn't know how she would do. So much of this crap is staged. But the women has some amazing talent, I hope she strikes big as a result of this.

Yup yup. Exactly what I was saying earlier, protesting the ridiculousness of judging her potential performance based on her appearance alone.

Though I have to say I expected different from you Stern. You always seem to be one of the first to go for the fatty/uggo strike first.

because this is the internet. I'm actually quite a nice guy IRL and am sensitive to other people's feelings . that's why on the interwebs I'm Captain Jackass ..because I'm not in real life. Also 90% of what I say is sarcasm

1st: i agree with stern

2nd: how do you know she wasn't pretty at a younger age?

3rd: i don't think she's made for the modern day music market. but she'd excel in opera and other more respected genres.
