You don't get discs with the Steam purchase, but there's an option in Steam to easily burn your own backup of the HL2/Steam files, which is just as good. If your HD goes bad or you reformat later on, just pop in the discs and you're ready to play HL2.
Also, if you've got a fast connection...
You can install the game key off the box but Half-Life 2 will still be under "Coming Soon". Once the decision is made to unlock HL2, it will drop into the "My Games" list.
And that is indeed true, Valve had to add some extra incentive to the Steam packages, because they want people to buy via...
I got mine on Tuesday the 9th, but I live pretty close to Valve so that's understandable. Enjoy that soundtrack, it's great. I've been listening to it for hours and hours and I like it more every time.
The collector's box isn't metal but it's still nice and great for... collecting. And of...
Eh, I can see how it's killing some people not to be able to open it and read a bit (or from cover to cover) but everytime I think about spoiling myself, I realize just how long I've been waiting, and that there are less than four days left.
The guide has been sitting here on the desk for...
No doubt. That track is epic-movie quality. They did all I had hoped and more. They took the best tracks from HL1 and dropped them into the sequel, remixed some of the other classics, and added a ton of new atmospheric music that isn't going to get old anytime soon.

I can't wait. Only days remaining. I work the night it's unlocked (I'm in the PST zone so I'm looking at midnight), so I need to finish up at work as quickly as possible and race home. I should be back at the computer at about 11:30pm, and then I can relax and check up on all the hype...
Hard all the way, and I'll savor every moment. I like it when ammo's scarce and you have to make each shot count (and use the manipulator more often to conserve your rounds). The extra damage will make the enemies seem all the more real and threatening, also.
I'll play all the way through on...
Absolutely. After I bought Gold (a month ago), I wavered a bit and wasn't really sure I'd made the right choice. After having the Gold package for over 24 hours, I'm still thrilled with the goodies. The soundtrack just couldn't be more badass, the Prima guide is great and filled with sweet...
Just for the record, my shipment was fine. The damaged Gold that you saw was a reference in another thread from the Steam forums. I think that's the only one I've heard of that was messed up. Fortunately, everyone else's Gold seemed to arrive intact.
As for the soundtrack, I love that...
Three difficulty modes: Easy, Normal, and Hard. This isn't really much of a spoiler but the tags are there just to be safe. The specifics of each are listed below:

Lol man why? Why after waiting literally years to play this game would you spoil one of the best surprises 6 days before it's out? Please be respectful of the other people here who are trying to avoid seeing spoilers as well. I know it's tempting but it'll be so much cooler if you find out for...
Negative. The CD included with the Gold package, if that's what you're referring to, only has the soundtrack on it. All the games you get with your Steam purchase are downloaded (and can be re-downloaded and easily burned to CD/DVD if you want a physical copy).

Yeah, I got everything that comes with the Gold package(more than I expected considering how many tracks are on the soundtrack CD) this morning, so now all I'm waiting on is the game to unlock on the 16th.
I mentioned it a few pages back, but I will admit it's a long thread already. The Gold...
I just found my reciept, I purchased Gold on the 7th of Oct. Took a little over four weeks to get here, but as Cliffe said there was a delay and people that order Gold today will get their goodies much sooner (two weeks max, I'd say).

To clear that up, there are five packages available. Three over Steam (only the Gold comes with a physical box, though) and two retail.
The two retail packages are called "Half-Life 2" and the "Half-Life 2 Collector's Edition". Those both come in boxes and must be bought in the store or...
