I think it was a part of the problem, but by no means the entire problem. TF2 went by the wayside in my mind when they decided to start implementing gameplay mechanics that, imo, have not stood the test of time.

The Conga Dance party servers are a focusing lens on the problem that has been grinding away at the appeal of TF2 for years. Why play the game when you can dance? Why develop the gameplay if the gameplay has evolved into dance? The switch was made.
