Blocking the fan with the plank of wood and barrels in there is fun, you can basically stay there hogging the items until the wood breaks because it jams the fan.
On the start up of hammer the first time I had that error too, I just directed it to the Half-Life 2/hl2 folder and it worked otherwise I had no NPC entities.
I got this prob too, the only way it worked was to manually copy the compiled bsp file to the hl2/maps - hl2dm/maps, load the game and load from the console. It seems compiling has some issues.
