H-L2.de has posted a breakdown of Gamestar's controversial article on their trip to Valve:
No time to translate, but it comes down to the following criticism:
- The promised 1 hour interview with Gabe Newell was shortened to 15 minutes.
- The hands-on gameplay was strictly supervised...
It's everyone's prerogative to believe what we want to believe.
Besides, there can be no evidence regarding a future event such as the release of HL2; the fiasco of 30/9 is a case in point.
Of course, this could just be a case of bad blood on Gamestar's part, because they wouldn't agree with the mandatory HL2 cover.
I think that at this point in time every bit of 'news' on the game should be met with a healthy degree of skepticism, no matter who the source is (including Valve).
To clarify, Gamestar's biggest complaint seems to be that the game still looks very early and far from finished, with Newell's insistance on a late summer release evoking the remark that he must be referring to summer 2005 rather than this year.
Again, this is still unconfirmed at this point...
On the subject of HL2 previews in German mags, I just noticed an interesting comment on a news article at Planet HL2 Net: http://www.planethl2.net/news.php?newsid=381&showcomments=YES
Apparently the topic header of the HL2 article in Gamestar is "Sinnlos in Seattle" which translates to...
That could be partly to blame on the quality of the magazine prints.
This taken from a post I made on a certain other game forum I frequent:
BTW, that certain other forum contains links to scans of the PC Games Hl2 article.
Hint: 3D Helms? General Aiming?
Gabe Newell truly is a master of the multi-interpretable non-committing commentary.
Hopefully E3 will bring a bit more solid info on the current status of HL2's development process.
The problems Fragmaster describes are largely of a PR nature, are they not?
If he were referring to project lead Gabe Newell, why would he finish with the comment "Half-Life 2 will almost certainly be a great game once it's released and I can't wait to play it"?
That's interesting; I remember reading in the pre-E3 previews last year that the "looking past your shoulder" effect was intentional.
Perhaps it's the slight (and also intentional) off-set of the eyes that creates this impression.
Ever considered that there may be more than one tower/base in the game?
My personal theory is that the silver tower is the HQ of a beautiful fairy queen that leads the forces of good against the on-marching combine.
I think you people are overreacting.
The article is clearly meant as a general introduction to the modding phenomenon, aimed at non-gamers.
Agreed, the author should have refrained from using the term "hackers" because of the negative connotations it has, but I don't think that's quite...
I don't know if DooM III models are more detailed, they simply use a different technique to convey texture.
Id's way looks more '3D', which means more immersive to some, but IMO it also sacrifices finer texture detail which adds to the unnaturally 'clean' look.
