You probably need to download a patch with the HL2 executable and some other files on release day, though. And decrypting the preloaded files also takes time.
So I doubt an install from CD will take longer.
The fact that you had to dig up a Scandinivian benchmark demonstrates the weakness of your argument.
A benchmark from HardOCP shows that the GT is just as fast as the Pro in Far Cry.
A benchmark from AnandTech shows that the GT is just as fast as the Pro in UT2004.
Those are DirectX games...
This seems to be pretty accurate for me. I prefer the $200 spot myself, which is why I now own a 9800pro.
Those who enjoy looking at benchmarks of the X800XT PE vs the 6800 Ultra might be in for a shock when they perform a search on newegg.com.
You'll find that all X800XT PE and 6800 Ultra...
The internet is stacked to the roof with articles. It's never that hard to find articles that agree with your opinion.
For example, from Gamespy's review of Far Cry:

I guess the best way to deal with it is as DarkStar suggested: to offer both an option for quicksave and for checkpoints.
Funny, nobody has commented on this part yet.
They do have a point: the quicksave system can feel like cheating sometimes. However, the alternative is a system with limited save games, which absolutely sucks, IMO. I hate limited save game systems in games such as Far Cry or Tomb Raider.
Half of all the first person shooter games ever released are based on Carmack's code. If anyone can code an engine, it's Carmack. I run Doom3 in 1280x1024 on an 9800 pro. Excellent framerate, no crashes, no artifacts.
You might wanna try a reinstall of your Catalyst drivers. Are you...
No, shadows aren't everything. But on those Doom 3 faces the shadows do enhance the feeling that those faces are truelly three dimensional. The face of G-Man looks a bit flat in comparison. More detailed, but flat.
No definite winner here.
The face of G-Man shows more detail due to a higher resolution texture, but the Doom 3 faces show more depth due to the shadows.
I second that.
IMO, it would have been better if they just kept quiet for now and then surprised us all tomorrow with the preload. Or the day after tomorrow. Or any day we didn't count on.
Nice post, Blahblahblah. Very informative!
I believe Carmack also said that assets should be reused as much as possible, to reduce development time. I wouldn't be surprised if I see some familiar fire extinguisher or coke can in a future Doom3 engine game.
I hate to rain on your parade, but higher cards render more effects then your GeForce 3.
It's nice that HL2 will be so scalable, but you're not getting the same image quality as owners of DirectX 9 videocards.
I don't think this is as easy as just "fixing a bug".
Going from simple shadows that only project on flat surfaces to complex shadows that correctly interact with all objects in the game is an enormous coding effort.
It's not as simple as just disabling the shadow of the box, because (like...
I believe we've had this discussion before.
The conclusion was that 80% of all anounced mods never get released anyway.
Which still leaves plenty of mods for HL2, but not as many as you would have expected from that number.
I'm sure FilePlanet or any other filesharing network would be happy to distribute such a file.
I'm not really concerned about HL2 performance on my computer. I just wanna take a look at all the sweet graphics in the VST. ;)
SuperSampling improves the looks of all textures. It's just that it's the most obvious on alpha textures.
However, I don't think 8xSA works well performance-wise on such a demanding game as HL2. It's better suited for older games. All the more reason not to use 8xSA in HL2 benchmarks and to...
