I don't own an Xbox but I know my friend will definitely be getting Halo2 and I am really looking forward to it. Coop or splitscreen MP on a console while everybody is right there is great fun and I'm not sure of how many upcoming Xbox FPS even offer these features let alone offer them at the...
I'm pretty sure I've seen Valve say they have cloth physics in HL2 (at least the faked kind). I'm also sure that what Troika did for Bloodlines is they added the ability for characters to take-off and put on their clothes that are physically simulated.
So Source is missing real-time shadows and thus it will be dated within a year?
Valve has already said that they are looking into a more efficient real-time shadow system for the future. Source is made to be upgraded. Deus Ex 2 beat everyone to the real-time shadow market on the Ureal2 engine...
Lightmaps are the best looking lighting systems right now while still allowing resources free for other features. When we have a real-time lighting/shadowing solution that looks as good and isn't a cpu killer should be when Valve adds it in. Valve has always been more about quality of the...
HL2 will not suck, the very worst it can do is be 'just good'. I mean, any game that gives you tight controls and movement(just like HL1), lots of bad guys (and striders) to shoot at and a manipulator as well as 30+ hrs of playtime is automatically 'just good' even if it isn't revolutionary...
We certainly do not know how HL2 will play but we have seen/heard bits about it and I have to say that it is much more ambitious than any other FPS I can think of. Just think of the amazing scenes that can be done in HL2 and not in any other game; imagine fighting guards in the combine citadel...
If Merc went there and was completely impersonal and asked questions the whole time Valve probably would not have invited him back. Instead (I assume) he was a good guy and Valve liked him and respected his 'knowledge of games' and let him playtest. Now he has impressions (45 min worth) on HL2...
HL1 plot:
-Gordon arrives at Black Mesa to perform experiment (There are technical difficulties and scientists are nervous)
-Experiment goes wrong but Gordon survives due to HEV suit
-Gordon encounters some survivors and must go to surface and find help
-Gordon makes his way around the...
I'm definitely on the iffy side and I have been for a long time. It's not tech tricks that make a game but good writing and design. Maybe we haven't been shown much yet but an RPG set in one location with no variety, no interesting characters/dialogue, no original gameplay elements, etc... just...
It's just a little glare effect that has been around for ages. HDR is not just a glare effect. Others have already described what it does but the result will be that your whole screen will be accurately lit like a photograph (the amount of light, intensity of light and colour of light will...
HalfLife was about storytelling. Everything, the relationships (though limited), the scripted events, the weapons, the enemies, the puzzles, the environment, the gameplay etc, is there to tell a story. After recently playing through the SP again (and reading an interview) you realize that...
the games look about the same tech level graphically but I prefer HL2 because, to me at least, it's artistically better; more interesting, more natural, more varied, more exciting.
