The Chinese government is considering taking meat from pet animals off menus across the country, raising concerns among dog farmers who have relied on the industry for generations.

The draft proposal to ban dog and cat meat has drawn an angry outcry from regions where the dish is popular.

Opponents say the ban would destroy local culinary traditions.

Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan reports from Jiangsu province in eastern China. (Feb 08, 2010)

Nice to see they're trying to enter the 21st Century

As much as we think it's gross, it is a delicacy. All regions/countries have them.. Farming dogs and cats is no different from farming cows and chickens.

I personally wouldn't eat dog or cat its gross, but I'm just saying.

****ing hell, let them eat dogs if they are farmed and bred for meals.

Just make it illegal to kill dogs that are not farmed...

Exactly. Make them stop stealing other people's pets so that they can eat them, and I'll be fine with this.

this just goes to show the relationship of pets/food of the West vs the East. you guys love foods we would call exotic here in North America. I'm sure some of us love cooking dogs and such, but its very taboo here. In fact I don't even know anyone that has had dog meat. My parents have had duck soup and whatnot, but its a big cultural difference.

A move to "catch up" with the rest of the civilized world. Few places consider dog meat appropriate.

I reserve the right to eat any species that can't solve Algebra II equations. That said, eating dogs is pretty gross.

And the fact that you judge other people's cultures based solely on the norms of your own culture goes to show that you are nothing but a western uncivilized barbarian.

Oh wait.

what ABOUT people who eat After Birth?? VIPER!!

You might consider that thinking everyone should have an open mind is a cultural norm you share, but others may not, and thus being hypocritical.

"An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded."

For keeeawwssss

I like your way of thought. You need to be Korean.

REPEL THE BARBARIANS AND TAKE OUR RIGHTFUL DESTINED PLACE!

calling me out as racist is labeling me as a racist and will more than likely lead me to become racist (if thats what you want). at least thats what i've learned in sociology class. the more you get labeled something the more likely you'll become it

I considered Reaper indoctrination once, but the benefits were shit.

So if I call you a fag, you'll turn into one? I like this logic you homo.

Eh, there are at least 3 more behavioral theories from what I learned in high school "Sociology/Culture I".

Man eating dogs is disgusting.

Speaking of food though, I just had a great dinner.

Anyone have any good cooking techniques?

Why does that look like strawberry pie to me?

Because pie is American, and we eat anything that looks like such.

I dunno but it tastes great!

forks another piece

I just looked at the image name, and er...

Seriously? Americans eat placenta?

Isn't that technically like cannibalism?

One of the most likely laws you didn't want stamped out, over the others of course.

If China is trying to make their appeal less weird, I can pick out a hundred other laws that could be a lot better to revoke. And if the farmers are losing their jobs, serious eating dogs isn't weird, it's this ****ing action they're taking.'

China =/= ****ed up.

It goes well with fava beans and chianti.

I'd eat dog or cat if someone offered it. No different from rabbit/squirrel/whatever the hell else.

This is what I did with my placenta, and it worked out fine.

Take the raw placenta, cut off the cord and membranes. Use a sharp knife; it's tough! Cut the placenta into two or three pieces, and put them in the blender. Blenderize the placenta. It will look like ground meat, or spam. It won't be soupy! Spread the placenta mush into the fruit roll tray of a food dehydrator and dehydrate for most of a day. I put my dehydrator out on the porch because it *can* get a little uh, aromatic. ;o)
Take the dehydrated placenta out of the dehydrator and put it back into the (washed and dried) blender. Powder it like you would to make cracker crumbs. The end result will look very much like instant coffee granules. You can now 'cap it up', or fill empty capsules with it. The average placenta will fill 60-100 capsules. (Mine filled 100)

Now you may take the capsules, and 'eating' your placenta will not seem nearly as disgusting.

What? Seriously?

Eh, the taste of Dog isn't really um, good. It's an acquired taste, and I've never been able to acquire it.

Where'd Krynn go?

NOOO WE WERE TOO LATE!!!

Nah, last time a Chinaman came to me looking for a meal, I quickly and easily turned the tables. I gotta say though, their cat and dog diet makes for some nasty tasting manflesh.

If you were quoting me - I am a Westerner, I prefer Oriental dishes to traditional Western dishes and although I haven't ever eaten dog meat I would give it a go. Having seen cattle for a large part of my life I still see no difference between them and Dogs from a food perspective.

If I thought eating meat was immoral then I would be a Vegetarian, I respect people who stand by their moral judgments. As soon as you take one kind of meat and animal as immoral to eat you must take the consumption of all life as immoral.

Unless you can give clear evidence as to why we shouldn't eat Dogs, I find it morally acceptable.

What makes the life of the Cow that makes up your steak any less valuable than that of a dog whose body became a steak for a different dish?

This thread makes me wonder how human tastes.
