Well, here comes hurricane Ivan. They're saying that if it strengthens to a catergory 5, and hits New Orleans directly, the city might be completely destroyed by floodwaters, (New Orleans is actually below sea level).

This article is kinda alarming, like 'Day After Tommorow' type alarming. I hope its exagerrating the threat:

one downside to ivan's current path is that the centre of the storm has been travelling over warm ocean fro a very long time compared to most hurricanes. This is bad as those who know anything about hurricanes know that they take most of thier energy from the moisture that evapourates over oceans with a temperature higher than 80f. By now your average hurricane path would have taken Ivan much further north to have at least hit the east coast of florida. Hurricanes lose much of thier strength when they hit land but because Ivan has taken such an unusual southerly path its very likely that it will become a 160mph F5 monster by the time it hits. We just have to hope the centre of the storm misses New orleans....
 
Well if I was a hurricane and someone decided to call me Ivan, I'd be pretty pissed too.

My best friend just got to Florida short of a month ago. He's in Florida attending college at Florida State, and it would tear me apart to see him go like that.

My best wishes and prayers for his safety.
 
This is incredibly sad and worriesome. My prayers to all those in N.O. or in the vicinity of Ivan. ;(

Well what can we do? Its not like we can discuss anything serious. Evacuation tactics? Emergency readiness? Maybe how the military should organize help efforts after a potential hit?

Shit happens. If we started caring more than we already do, everyone on this planet would be horribly depressed, and the world would be a very boring place. Over 40,000 people die every year in car accidents in the US alone, for example. Think on that for a few years, and you'll come to quite a horrific figure.
 
Not to mention our overpopulation of the planet is going to be the cause of our species' extinction...

it doesn't stop a hurricane, it just helps whoever's being pwned by it to make the right decisions
 
I highly doubt the death toll from Ivan would be that high, regardless of whether New Orleans is below sea level or not.

Modern science has given us the ability to track and monitor a hurricane for many days, giving people lots of time to prepare for damage and to evacuate.

Unfortunately, N.O. is not accustomed to dealing with Hurricanes and therefore I think the death tool may be significant, more likely a couple hundred at the most. This will be due to people not being able to leave (elderly with nobody to care for them), and people who refuse to leave (I'm staying to watch this thing!, or, I can't leave my kittens!!).

Plus, the damage is going to be terrific, even if Ivan is only Cat4. That area is just not as prepared for that kind of storm, and the problem of it being below sea level will amplify the damage.

So, yes it will be a very bad thing for N.O., but no, there is not going to be 10,000 deaths.

I predict the cost of lumber will go up in Michigan, too. Just because I have to repair my roof!! Why does this always happen to me?

Well... new orleans IS a city of theives and whores.... Maybe if the good people get out first we'll have some Biblical-style retribution?

Well thats certainly mixed reactions epitamised in a thread.


You can either laugh or cry, but making a joke of it is something different. When you say laugh in the phrase it means be optimistic, keep your spirits up and try to keep a light heart, not litteraly laugh at the human tragedy of people diying.

Its mad that just a week ago someone said "I love you guys in Florida, you act like a pinball paddle keeping the hurricans out of Texas" He lived in Texas obviously. I know Ivan isn't exactly in Texas now :D, but same difference, its in that area.

I wonder how people are gonna deal with this, I mean its not exactly like they get them in that area all that often.
 
is it too much of an extreme measure to evacuate the city? from that article, it just seems like most people just want to stay. i reckon it's partly the authorities, as they're telling people to leave the city, but not offering any options as to where they can stay. so the people decide to stay. :|

I'm not wanting to sound uncaring, but if they decide to stay then so be it. Its their decision and I'm sure they have their reasons, whether its ignorance, scared of losing their posetions or something more sentimental.

I did just see on the news before, that a lot of people have in fact evacuated. Thay showed different parts of the city and it was dead.
