12-7-05, 3 New Oblivion Screens (X360)

Mmmmmm. Those screenies are so good, I need a cigarette now.

I'm wondering if they'll manage a smoth frame rate with visuals as detailed as that. The 360 is a beast, but look at those shots!

I really hope they don't plan on adding a HUD.

You promised newness! I see no newness!

I do see sexyness though :D

in one of the videos i believe, they say that they aren't, it's going to be minimal (as seen) and as in morrowind.

I'm still waiting for the fully dynamic soft-shadows which they said were ALREADY ingame in a Q/A with'em this summer.

Maybe they decided to pull the shadows because they made the game too dark or they lowered performance too much. Maybe they're just not on for the screenshots. Either way, the game still looks great.

Too dark shouldn't really be a problem, oh well, if the XB360 doesn't feature it, I'm pretty sure the PC vers still will..
I'm not saying it's ugly or anything without, but it does look sort of weird with no characters casting ANY shadows on the ground, nor any from items etc.
It definitely pulls away from the immersiveness factor for me.

And I know Oblivion is all about the gameplay, but for me, the best Elder Scrolls RPG will always be Daggerfall.:)
But hopefully Oblivion will be more like Daggerfall than Morrowind.

Does anyone know if Oblivion will feature a court like Daggerfall did?
It was great going to court and defending yourself, or pleading guilty etc.:)

Watching the videos they release the guys says that they had to "break" the game to improve it. when you change 1 factor in a program sometimes you can throw the whole thing for a loop. Remember the draw in distance was all screwed up on that older video last month? but they got the loading times down, and got the framerate up, its easier to debug the game when its running fast as possible too.

There is no way they will take them out of the game. People demand shadows by now. the Xbox could do them with Splinter Cell even. I know its a different resolution but trust me it can handle it. it laughs at it. The 360 has unified shader 3.0.
..whatever its called. shader 3.0! (i think thats like higher than the best)

They are just still working on the game thats all

By the way I hate to say this but i think it has up to 6 months of work left. Just guessing by the way everything is so far from complete. the whole Launch title thing may have been to get people to "jump in"?

Im not crying tho, i can't afford a 360 yet anyway, so the longer they spend making it better, the happier i am about buying it

Well really it's great and it's bad.
You see, we have Pixel Shader 3.0 on Pc's. Now there are Pixel and Vertex(?) shaders. Now the 360 has shaders that act as both, while on the PC there seperate. This is good and bad. Good if you know how to make use of them. Bad if you don't.
Basically if you need alot of vertex shaders at one time, it's horrid cuz none left for pixel thus you need to know how to get all that correct.
Basically 3.0 is what the Pc uses, it's a DX9(b??) standard. 360 uses DX9.

Note: You need a 6X00, 7X00, or 1X00 for PS3.0.

Basically the acutal power of 3.0 is the same on the 360 as on the Pc. When looking at games that use Open Gl(Onlys goes for Some Pc games, and all Revolution and Ps3 games) they do not use 3.0 because thats a DirectX standard.

They already said they were done, they said they were just focusing on optimizing it. Isn't it coming out Q1 2006?

Yes it is, Mars 2k6, so it's only about 3-4 months left, depending on how you view it.

That would be 'March' 2k6 :p

oh man, i wish i could run this on my pc, or afford an upgraded pc, or affor a X360, look slike da best eva yo

Looks good on 360, can't wait to see how awesome it'll look on PC.

More screens won't get me more excited about this one. I have been at my peak for a while now. This game will hopefully be one of the best RPGs ever, though it still might be a tall order to dethrone the likes of BGII:SoA and Planescape: Torment.

Thank goodness I have the amazingly huge, long, and involved Dragon Quest VIII to keep me busy at least until this releases. :E

there's something about the art direction that I just dont like ..a little too shiney, too clean, too "perfect" ...for my money the best art direction in a fantasy themed game is WoW ..there's just something believable about the world ...but I havent played the game so I really dont know and it wont stop me from getting Oblivion as it's been my most anticipated since bf2

btw if this is an example of what xbox360 is capable at launch it'll be interesting to see what they'll be capable by year 5 ...look at morrowind for xbox ..it was a launch title and it pales next to the majority of xbox games released since then

DreadLord1337, seeing as the XB360 vers is running maxed, the standard game won't look better on a PC, aside from perhaps a higher resolution.

And VictimOfScience, how can you forget Ultima 7?
That's like one of the best open-ended RPGs ever made, but I guess seeing as it's from 1992 not alot of people play it, sadly.

And CptStern, my dear lil' hunnybunny, Morrowind wasn't a release title for the XB1, it released in June 2k2, which is more than half a year efter the XB1 launch(In North America).

o rly?

meh it still looks crappy compared to the current xbox games

Ack! You're right! I was only thinking of the greatest stuff from recent memory. Ultima 7 was a beautiful and terribly fun game.

But if we go back that far, then perhaps the all-time greatest RPG experience I ever had was Legacy of the Ancients for the C64--an amazingly deep and complex game with all sorts of freedom from the get-go. Robbing banks and casinos made for some dangerous but fun entertainment too. Ultima 4:Quest of the Avatar was one of my favorite and most memorable RPG experiences at the time as well. Those were the days...;(

What really sucks is that they have decided to charge for their little 'additions'. Not only does that apply to Xbox, but us PC users as well. I know buying their little additions like horse armor is a choice, but it just makes me feel like they take features out of the game to sell to us. It makes buying the actual game much less 'complete'.

So does that also mean that, in order to stifle the competition for their mods, Bethesda will handicap the CS? That's what I fear, and what I think really sucks.

To clarify: I mean the official mods Besthesda plans to produce, similar to the ones such as female armor or the archer shop made for Morrowind, will have to be paid for.

I can't wait untill that game comes out. I will never leave my room again!

yeah, they need to dirty it up a bit

anyways, it looks awesome.

it seemed like the pc screens were a bit better than the 360 one's, not sure if that's just me

cant wait to see it in all it's glory on my 7800gt (me plans to make love to it tonight)

/me plans to kill stern and make a mask of his- er, steal his 7800.

/me plans to give JNightshade a free 360 if he leaves Stern alone "Won't someone think of the children!?"

/me plans to dress up in mission impossible gear and steal the 360 and the 7800Gt

I can't wait to play this game. Still not sure whether to get it on my PC or 360. Most likely 360 since it will be able to run the game much better than a PC...but console controls are yucky.

oh, i cannot stand the art direction of WoW.

Keebler elves style cartoon tree buildings and goofy tinkertown. There are areas that are beautiful, but all of the buildings are horrible. they made doorways all crooked on purpose and just goofy stuff. Well thats my opinion

Dreadlord did they take bloom out of the game or something? or just for debugging?

Also, without the shadows it doesn't look very good to me. Can't wait untill they finish.

My favorite RPG / Game of all time: (2nd post down) (post # 62)

Oblivion has nice graphics, but I can comprehensively say I'm not excited about it in any shape or form, mostly because I think Morrowind is a huge pile of stinking garbage, it cured my insomnia though.

The demo trailer seemed cool till they showed off the 'AI' which im in two halves about, its deep and cool but retarded at the same time... because the blending between animation's is so bad in places it hurts my eyes. To me the sword fighting and magic casting seems totally lame say compared to 'might and magic' previews ive seen using the source engine.

ooo i know what you are saying i think.

In the video where he was casting fire repeatedly then using his sword?

Yea thats like an identity crisis. ooo ooo im a fighter! no no im a wizard! ooo i dont know fighter.. not wizard

Fizard!

yea the animation seemed kind of awkward like off balance.

like unessesary also becuase he was doing more damage with the sword

regardless this game is going to be the shit dude. seems like they are still working on the fighting mechanics. (maybe in elder scrolls 5) Its about 10 times better looking fighting mechanics than morrowind though :D

and morrowind was addictive and fun for a while anyway

VirusType, I think he was talking about the animation in general?
Haven't you seen in the trailers when he goes into the house to that lady with the dog?
She turns around like she's a ****ing statue?
Way too lifeless, they had the same problem with Morrowind.
Hopefully they'll fix that so it doesn't look as crappy by release.:)
And I still wish they had fighting mechanics like the one in that Source-based Fantasy game that's coming out next year, where you can pierce people with your sword, kick'em off it etc..
Oh well.:D

And Daggerfall > Morrowind.:p

How many here played Daggerfall btw?:)
