16:9 vs. 16:10

Glad to see your chart reading class got some usage after all.

Yeah, you don't have to study the graph.
BTW the graph shows just GTG times. Just different levels of grey (dark to light, 0 to 255).

Damn dude, for the same price as a 24" 1920x1200 resolution samsung, I can get a 28" 1920x1200 resolution Hanns-G, whatever the hell that is.

I wonder why. I guess I'll have to figure this shit out once I can actually afford one. I'm also actually thinking about maybe just getting a $200 1920x1080 and saving the extra money for a second one. dunno.

Have you made any decisions yet Virus?

EDIT: Oh, the other one has no DVI.

The only decision I've made is that 2ms doesn't really mean much, so that gives me hundreds more to choose from, and opens up a lot more 16:10 monitors. So now, the only reason for me not to get a 16:10 monitor is that the LED monitor I'm interested in is 16:9.

But I haven't spent any time comparing further because I don't have the paycheck in the mail yet. Waiting on them to approve my invoice.

I don't really know a whole lot about LED, and it could be a fad or someshit. But CFL tubes burn out in a matter of a couple years (as much as I'd use it). The LED back-lighting should last longer than the rest of the components in the monitor. The ultra slim design is nice looking, but not important. I don't like the wide ass frame borders. I'd rather it had no borders at all, just whatever it takes to hold the shit together. I guess that's where they put the LEDs, and that's why they are wide.

One thing to consider is that Newegg apparently has an 8 dead pixel minimum return policy.

This concerns me. From what I've been reading Brick & Mortar stores typically have more robust return policies regarding dead pixels. I would never be able to get over a dead pixel... those types of things catch my eye and bug me to no end. It's hard for me to ignore.

In a way it can be nice grabbing a LCD from best buy on a sale or something for that reason. But they don't have the selection or consistent low price (normal prices).

And you might want to check out what the manufacture's policy is. Ever bring home a product that has a flier which says to contact them first rather than returning to the store? If the manufacture's policy is better then why not.
I know of people who have got great service direct from the manufacturer (some guy had an issue with an epson printer and they sent him one out asap and told him to keep the 'broken' one).

Hmm. Yeah, that's worth considering. From what I read getting dead pixels is quite rare these days, especially from newegg... but with my hardware luck chances are I'd get one. And even just one dead pixel, unless it were on the edge of the screen, would bug the hell out of me.

You make a point about not having the selection and consistently low prices from brick and mortar stores. They're almost always way more expensive, and I'm going to be quite selective when I buy my monitor, so they probably won't have it. 1920x1200 resolution, 24" or greater and under $350... which seems to be quite a limited selection available.

Do any of you have opinions on Asus as far as their monitors are concerned? I know they make motherboards, but didn't know they make monitors. Vegeta keeps telling me to avoid Asus, but I think that's only because he is a shill for Samsung.

Had my eye on this beast. I keep looking around, trying to find good deals. I took your advice Asus and would gladly choose a monitor with hundreds of reviews and 4 eggs, rather than 5 eggs and just a small handful of reviews.

PC mag seems to like it as well.

Sale on it ends end of the month, and I might have enough money by then for it. Still keeping my eye open though for good deals for me and Virus.

If you gather any information from your LED research Virus, be sure to let us know. I'm doing my own right now.

16:9 is cheaper because the screen area you are getting is actually fairly smaller. A 22" 16:10 monitor has a screen area about 10% bigger than a 22" 16:9 monitor.

I use a 22" 16:10 screen which is pretty awesome, I hate putting 16:9 on, you get that black bar along the bottom which is crap, it's good for films but for everything else it's rubbish.

Hey Virus you should get this monitor... it's a steal at only $5,000! I bet it only has $200-$300 shipping too! and look at that ultra thin border!

From everything I've been reading, it seems like 16:10 is going the way of the dodo thanks to manufacturer laziness and desire for easier, cheaper manufacturing processes... as well as the lame ass 1080p buzz word always going around.

I keep looking every day, and it seems like all of the monitors are being sold out, with indications that there won't be many new ones introduced onto the market.

All the more reason to get one while you still can.

Yes... but it can't be a Samsung.

We'll see if there are more available throughout the month... but it doesn't look like there will be. Literally every site I've been going to, they've been sold out and also increased in price by about $70

Welp... they did an offer I couldn't refuse. The monitor I was looking at that had a deal that ended at the end of may, now ends at 5/20. It's like 30 bucks less not counting the free shipping which reduces it more... plus bing cashback. So I had to get it.

It's not a Samsung(sorry veggies), and it has onboard speakers which I won't use... but it has 400+ reviews at 4 eggs, so I'm going to try it and hope I don't get any dead pixels and don't have any issues with it and it lasts me for years.

EDIT: ****... should have checked amazon. didn't realize they were all doing their stuff at the same time.

Oh well... doesn't matter.

On the positive side Newegg is speedy with delivery and Amazon is a week+ sometimes.

This is true. 3 day guaranteed delivery. Red Dead Redemption arrives Tuesday... my monitor arrives Wednesday, and I go to work Wednesday night. Probably won't get any play time with it until Friday afternoon.

Hey Virus, be sure to let me know what you eventually end up getting for your monitor. I hope you find something within your budget that you're happy with.

I honestly would trust Asus with most everything they produce. I've had nothing but good things from their mobos (almost buy exclusively Asus) and a laptop I bought from them has been great. I sent the laptop to one of their warehouses for repairs and they had it back to me in four days, no joke: two days there, one day repair, shipped the same day overnight. Really, really good company.

Good to know, Qonfused.

Raziaar, aren't they the same price at both places? So why were you upset?

Because when I posted that link, it was at like $269.

They literally increased the price in that short span of time, no lie. Under 20 minutes.

Hmm, weird. I could have sworn when I posted that link, it was an Amazon New used price.

Maybe I was just seeing things.

Anyway, oh well. Can't wait until it gets here. And I can't wait to figure out what Virus gets when he gets his money to do so. Those LED LCD screens seem quite cool, but didn't really see any in the proper sizes or at 1920x1200 resolutions, so that's a bummer.

The screens with LEDs are the same as regular LCDs as far as the pixels go. It's the backlighing that has changed from CCFL to LED. It's just a back light. (There are benefits but it is similar technology that we already use.)

OLED is the actual pixels that are different and these do not need a backlight. (not in mass production yet)
