17 hours to complete...is that short?

Holy crap guys how long does it take you to pass your games? i cant think of a single FPS that took me over 15 hours first time through, and only long games reach that length (Far Cry keeps draagggiiinnngggg and dddddrrrraaaaaaaggggggggggiiiiiiiiinnnnngggg ZZZZzzzzzzz....)
Anyone played Red Faction 1? Or even 2? they were short, they had a lot of shortcomings, but they were F*^%ng FUN! I played through both of them at least *3

17 hours is plenty for me. I wish all games would be that length. I hate long games with a passion. I have a life. Not a half-life!

17 hours is fine Doom3 was around 20 hours and that got too repetitive, could have cut out quite a few middle levels like the Alpha Labs 3 and 4 and some of the Delta Labs. I like to take my time with games, exploring all i can and your right about the manipulator gun ading extreme replay, like beating the entire game with just the manipultor and crowbar.

I had to register just to reply to the FarCry bashing.

Are you kidding me? I thought FarCry was top-notch in every way. I finished it last moth, right after finishing Doom 3. I can't think of any way that Doom 3 was better than FarCry (ok maybe the skins looked a little better). Most importantly FarCry was so much more fun and the levels were diverse. The only flaw in FarCry was that the level of difficulty on the last level was flat out evil. I personally never noticed that the character ran slowly.

You're quite correct - Far Cry was superior to Doom 3 in about every way imaginable! :)

But alas, Half Life 2 shall dominate all.

FarCry is a fine game, and you will learn that not everybody here hates it. It took me until the Pier level to really get into it, but once I did it was a blast.

Because it's an FPS - we don't expect 40 hour gameplay from an FPS. I'd rather have 20 hours of sheer gaming bliss than 30 plus hours of mediocrity punctuated by a few moments of sheer brillaince.

As talented as Valve is, there is no way they could have sustained that type of gameplay and storytelling for much beyond 20 hours or so. That's just unreasonable to expect that from the FPS genre.

And don't bring the beta/map pack into it - those were largely conceptual and bound to change anyway :p
i remember in last year's pc gamer preview of hl2, gabe said the game would be 40-60 hours long. i

He said it was actually more like 36-48 hours but let's face it, that was before they actually got down to the editing process and taking out things that just didn't work.

HL2 is an FPS, not an RPG. Games of 40 to 60 hours are RPGs. You would NEVER want an FPS that lasted that long as I guarantee you'll never finish the game because of repetition. Again, I'll say this - Half Life 2 is 20 hours of pure gaming excellence, action coupled with a compelling story. There is no way you could maintain that for 40 hours without it eventually growing tedious.

And here is the quote from PC Gamer regarding the 17 hours of gameplay:

"The essence of Hl2 is exploration and experimentation. It took me roughly 17 hours to complete the game, but I could easily--EASILY--see that playtime creeping into the 20-plus hours considering all the nooks and crannies there are to explore."

Thus, rest assured dear friends we have at the very least a 20 hour game on our hands. More than enough for our gaming pleasure.

Only 8 hours your first time through? I have a hard time believing that :p
I did it in one sitting, too. Minus going to the toilet.

I always want games to be long. But i wont judge hl2 before i play it. in my opinion something around 25-30 hours of gameplay would be perfect.

Deus Ex was perfect.

well considering Max Payne 2 which was pretty short, which i thought was great. I'll take substance over length any day. Just go and watch and Indian Bollywood movie, 20 hours of mediocraty does not equait to a good film.

Pssh. I'm spending as long as I can in Traptown, pwning with physics. That's 17 hours right there.

Amen brother, amen.

17 hours isn't that long but it isnt that short either.
The first time i played Ninja Gaiden through it took me 16 hours (f*cking ridiculously hard the first time through)
Metroid Prime took me 13:54 (only 68% complete though)
System Shock 2 took me 19 hours.
Halo took me about 11 hours.
Max Payne 2 took me about 14 hours

All of these games were pretty short when you think about it, but they all rock (except Metroid Prime, that was disappointing).

So if it takes 17-19 hours, its all good in my books.

17 hours is a good half life ammount of time. wow... i used to beat half life everyday, and that took about 6-8 hours. that was during the summer time though. 17 hours for half life 2??? godaaaamn, looks like i'm gonna need more caffine.

it took them 6 years to come up with a 17-hour game, meaning that for every day spent on it, they added another 27.6 seconds to the game.

It took them 6 years to build Source and build HL2 , so hl2 itself wasn't 6 years in the making.

I am certain that when I will play the game it will take me much longer than 17 hours to complete .

I play in slow pace , don't sit for hours and hours and with HL2 there is alot to do with and in the world itself.

i just took a look in the pc zone mag. from april 2004 (i think), with the hl2 preview in it.

quote:
"Half-Life 2 could be up to twice as long as the original."

... :hmph:

17 hours is pretty long, i completed deus ex 2 in 6 hours, and halo didnt take logn either, but to me, those games were brilliant, and considerign half life 2 is only 17 hours when you rush through it....i think it might take a good 25 hours to complete if you explored everywhere.

I hope its as logn as the original deus ex tbh.

And just as long as i am not dragged through plasticy looking corridors, fighting generic zombies and demons that appear from handily placed lockers, behind me or when i open a door and i forced to listen to something id has the cheek to call "a story" then i am fine :D (well thats how i felt about playing doom 3, but that doesnt mean its to turn this thread into a doom 3 hate/vs war)

what dissapoints me most is that they removed some of the most interesting levels... but yeah 15-20 hours is kinda short
What now?

Taken out levels?

I would expect the typical gamer to get around 30 hours of gameplay out of a once through of halflife 2. The PC gamer guy completed it in around 17 hours due to the tight publishing deadlines they have to deal with

17 inches is a fair size. I don't know anyone who take all of that.

Yes.... several scenes were cut. This is probably because they didnt work for whatever reason. I dont worry about it because i know the exact same thing happened with HL1...

17 hours is way too short... I was expecting at least 30, I mean were talking about Half-Life 2 here. Im getting really sick of short games. Hopefully it has some real replay value, like Deus Ex or something. I mean, I replayed Deus Ex literally 18 times (i am obssesed with deus ex). The first time easily took me 35+ hours.

I might not have a complete life , but **** that. Im a pc ubergeek, thank you.

I find 17 hrs TOO short !!
See Doom 3 : great game, very short. Hope HL2 is longer, if not we're dooomed !!

doom 3 was about 22-26 hours. It didnt feel to short for me coz i was shting my pants for most of it with surround sound on a projector.
If HL2 is less then 25 hours i wil be VERY dissapointed. I loved how HL went for ages.

Doom 3 took me about 10 hours....

Hopefully HL2 will be a tad harder to complete.

This is an individual thing based on how someone plays so I'm not sure why some get so upset based on reviews. It's kinda like reading the "Miles per Gallon" rating for your car and expecting that EXACT number every single time you drive. Of course it really depends on how you drive and whether you drive more highway or city etc.

As others have said, I think it's fairly safe to say that all the reviewers didn't have all the time in the world to really explore. They had to get in, play, write a review. And if I'm not mistaken all the playing took place at Valve, not a comfy office or at home where you would feel comfortable taking your time.

I think for most of us we will take our time and probably can add anywhere from 1-10+ hours depending on how we play. I know for me when I played HL1 it took me a lot longer than the hours other people were saying it took them.

So, for me, I'm not worried at all.

Then you will be VERY disappointed. The only way I see you getting 25 hours out of this game is if you play on Hard and do lots of exploration. Well guess what? THIS AN FPS, NOT AN RPG - there is no way in hell any FPS is going to be too much beyond 20 hours.

Doom 3 took over 20 hours because it was so damned dark and tedious to play.

The original Hl formula was so flawless I remember playing anything I could to extend the experience - that's all the expansion packs and 3rd party mods, and of course multiplayer. I'm hoping HL2 will be the same.

I dont' want to start this all over again, but doom3 was a really terrible game compared to far cry...how many space dungeons are we going to see from that franchise? far cry was superior to doom in almost every aspect...as for HL2, I can't believe that the pc gamer reviewer said it tops HL1 in every way possible...that's a herculean task Valve just pulled off...If the length of doom3 was 5 hours longer or shorter, it just wouldn't have mattered to me...I didn't care about where that story or environment was going to go...
