1UP Network purchased by UGO, employees laid off/EGM finished

I will really miss Lan Party podcast, even if it is a shadow of the former GFW. Best of luck to all that got laid off, 40+ people.

Iirc, UGO were the ones who had some crappy E3 site up last year that claimed Valve would be showing Episode 3 info there.

Damnit what abunch of idiots, I loved the 1up show. Great stuff.
The forums at 1up are livid about these guys getting fired:
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3172156
lol from the looks of it they just shot themselves in the foot and lost about 2/3 of their traffic :laugh:. Fxckin dumbasses.

Goodbye, EGM. You were a staple in every gamer's diet, and for a good, long time the only monthly gaming rag worth reading. I shall miss you and keep fondly the stack of old issues from the 90s.

That's interesting. EGM <the country I live in> edition died a week ago because of financial reasons.

Sad sad sad. I went and downloaded all of the Retronauts podcasts I did not have last night. What a bunch of seriously dumb m_therf_ckers to get rid of those folks and the work that they did.

And EGM...well, EGM and I go waaaaaaaaay back to the very early days. It is not the right time to say goodbye. I was not ready for this. I guess you never really can be. ;(

UGO just has a bunch of shitty online ass games, **** them.

Who cares, video game "journalists" are whores anyways.

:upstare: ..you know I really try to stay positive about some of the things you say Mikeal. But then you top it with something even more stupid than the previous statements. I lose the will to excuse it as youthful overexhuberance and just a little bit of, oh I dont know, lack of joie de'vivre and possibly a hint of some former crime (anal surprise? a van full of developers ran over your dog?) commited on your person by the video game industry

quasi journalists yes (for the most part), whores not so much, especially if you understand the first thing about a business works. unless you mean Major Nelson but since he works for microsoft .......no

It's the ever lowering standards in the gaming industry and press (I won't call it journalism, since that'd imply people writing about games do research or actually have a clue).

And yes, I enjoy blanket statements.

Yeah, I went to 1up more and more for my news and podcasts because they were so upfront about the problems with their industry and were willing to take stands that caused publishers to cut them off from pre-release coverage (see: Ubisoft & Assassins Creed).

As a business move this is absolutely moronic (1UP's staff were what made the site what it was), but all of these guys are going to land on their feet, as we've seen from everyone else on the site who has moved on recently (Sean Elliott, Jeff Green, John Davison, etc).

Twitters that got set up to keep track of people:
http://twitter.com/pkollar
http://twitter.com/chufmoney
http://twitter.com/nsuttner

New podcasts are already starting up, with Suttner's Rebel FM releasing the next day or so supposedly.

For a second I read "IGN Network purchased" and I was all :D

But then I went :(

I dont understand why you expect gaming press to have the same level of journalistic cred as say the New York Times or the Guardian. It's hobby press, no different than the "writing" seen in Field and Stream or Guns and Ammo or Biking Enthusiast, or the The Big Guide to Grooming your Chia Pet to look like a Celebrity. It's not even at the level of comic books press. But really why are you so surprised? video games have NEVER been high brow, why should the press be?

Nah, he caught his dog cheating on him with a game journalist.

Well there's that, but even the people doing the games review sections for other more general publications such as the Guardian are usually a pretty low standard. I know my sister complains about the guy her film magazine has reviewing games a lot, but it's pretty difficult to find anyone even halfway decent.

it's mostly because these people are writers first and at times casual gamers. What's worse is that often the editorial team will tailor an article towards people who may have little or no experience with video games

Forbes for example has pretty good video game coverage but only becuase the writer is a avid gamer who wrote for gaming press and CNN

http://money.cnn.com/2006/05/31/commentary/game_over/column_gaming/

To be honest I thought UGO was long dead, they used to be big about a decade ago, I remember the big Half-Life modding site at the time was hosted by them, but since then they have disappeared.

As for gaming sites in general, I usually just pick one that has the same views I have, that way I dont get angry, lol, Im an annoying little fanboy afterall.

Dramatizing much? Boo-hoo, people get fired every day. As one of the other posters pointed out, they'll land safely in other places.

That's a cute "fallen" list, by the way. Kind of reminds me of Taurin's Drama Fox.

Choke on a dick, and be done with it Mikael.

Not being a colonial my relationship with 1UP was strictly through the website, Podcasts & 1UPshow, which I got into a couple of years ago and have followed avidly since. I have no worries that all of the fallen will be able to move onto pastures new and/or reinvent themselves, the loss is more in the sudden termination of probably one of the enthusiast gaming presses best vehicles. When these people talked about games it was with a passion, enthusiasm and general love of the medium in an accessible, frank and convivial way, and over time you got to know them as personalities and that helped enrich the experience because you knew the sort of positions they were coming from and why they were saying them, and appreciate their assessment/take on things more. Now suddenly that window has been abruptly shut.

Some things are a foot by a few of the guys here though:-

http://www.eat-sleep-game.com/news/

They even managed to do an informal podcast today, and despite the fact they've all been kicked to the curb managed to fit in a considerable amount of game talk on it as well:-

I really hope they get some Robert Ashley (even if he was freelance) and Ryan Scott in there, too.

ugh ryan scott, while a nice guy is soooo boring, worst host ever

Dr Max Chill, PhD was the man ;)

Ah don't be so hard on Ryan (white women only!!). I thought it was pretty good of him to create LanParty after GFW went down, even if was just an excuse to listen to Anthony and Max Chill waxing lyrical. Not being an MMO man I never listened to legendary thread but I understand he was pretty good on that (though feel free to correct me if I was wrong).

He was shit compared to Jeff Green or Shawn Elliot...but my deepest desire is just to have the Brodeo back. :(

ya Ryan did make a good target for elliot and green, oh those were the days

The hell? Slag Ryan all you want but he had 2 catch phrases which is more than most (Hell yeah!!)

BTW both Shaun and Jeff were recently reunited on the gamers with jobs podcast for an Ep around Christmas. GWJ isn't a bad podcast tbh, been listening to it for a while and they are fairly grounded. Worth checking out if your not familar with it.

Nice. I'm about to dl now. Anyways I agree what made 1up stand out was the emphasis on their personality and getting to know the crew through podcasts, 1up show and broken pixels.
Broken pixels is just hilarious and why I love 1up so much:

ya I listen to it every week ..skip through some of the boring parts. they're geekier than most but at least they usually know what they're talking about

never listen to Joystiq podcast. Justin macelroy is freakin annoying. he has a really weird southern accent, is probably obese (wheezing) and constatly sniffs as if he' just did a line of coke. worst broadcast personailty ever

just started listening to giant bomb ..i has some of the old (good) members of the hotspot (gamespot podcast) jeff gertzman and someone else I recognise from the show

Yeah, Giant Bomb guys on the 1up Christmas podcast made me want to start listening to them too.
