250W on X800 XT?

I just got my X800 XT PE but found out that my power supply is 250 W. I'm wondering will it work on my computer?

Doubtful. Even if you have a mimimum of stuff running from the power supply the X800 might suck more juice than it can provide.

Still, you could try it. I don't know what might happen though. Minimum PSU for a 9800pro is 300w, and the X800s are even more power hungry.

A new PSU is a relitively cheap and easy upgrade (depending on how confident you are at fiddling around. Get a name brand PSU, and something in the region of 350+w to be on the safe side.

The only thing that will happen is the computer won't boot as there isn't enough power for it to do anything. The x800, according to ATi, requires 300watts, just like the 9800

The 6800 GT is recommended with atleast 300w so I'd imagine the x800XT isn't very different (perhaps even a higher use seeing it's the fastest around)

The x800 uses less power then the 9800's, which is odd but that's what's said anyway. I'm running my machine (3.0 ghz, Sap. Rad. 9800 Pro) on a 300W PSU, and I'm doing fine.

The x800 uses the new manufacturing process (0.13 micron in think) which means that the chip should run cooler than 9800 so is therefore more efficient meaning that less power is wasted and it can run on the same wattage (or lower) psu as a 9800.

Just a question though, I don't loose fps just because I am running on 250w, right?

No you shouldnt lose frames but if power is an issue the computer will become unstable and freeze, restart etc.

Your machine wouldn't happen to be a dell, would it? Their 250w PSUs are reported as an average rate, so in comparison to other PSUs they run at about 340-350w.

I installed it because someone using x800 pro and running a 200w psu said that it works fine on it. So I don't think that power is an issue anymore. It was just weird at the beginning when I started the computer for the first time after I plugged in my card. It ran slow and all but no freezes or something like that. After installing the drivers it runs just fine now.

I have to ask this too, whats the normal temp for graphic cards?

I see that mine is running normally 45c but it can go high as 55c. is it normal?

Yeah, the x800 starts to get damaged at about 120c. Normal temps are about 45-55 idle and 65-75 under load.

You have nothing to worry about.

Ok something just happened.

While I was testing FarCry, about 10 min later I got a black screen. But I could hear the sound, I tried ctrl+alt+delete but nothing happened(on the screen) it was still black. Not to mention it started to smell a little, it didn't smell like something burned though.

I had to restart the computer and then it ran slowly, restared again and now it runs as normal. I'm affraid to try more games now.

Could that be a psu problem?

Yeah, that might be a PSU problem. Honestly, I would spring for a good Enermax or Antec 350-400w PSU. They aren't that expensive.

If its Hiper they are a fairly decent brand. I have a hiper 520watt in my main rig and have had no problems with it. Go for it.

I was about to hit order and then I saw this: Hiper ATX 525W HPU-3S525 Triple Fan, Silent, PFC, it costs only $5 more. Is it better than the 420W one? Its strange that it has 105w more and only costs $5 more.

I think that is the one i have. Its a good psu, as its only $5 extra then go for it as it will make upgrading in the future easier as well.

Is there any way to see how much watt the psu has without opening it?

should say on the case of the psu on a sticker. It might have a table with lots of numbers then at the bottom say Total Output:xxxwatts.

If there isn't any programs that can check your psu I have to ask this:

I bought my comp in june last year, it was a super comp at that time. It had these spec:

512 Mb RAM
3.06 Ghz
9700 NP

the comp name is Presario 8430se

My question is, is it possible that it had/has over 300w since it was a super comp at that time? If I'm not wrong, the older ones uses under 300w psu.
