2ch respond to JRPG hate

"Japanese RPGs are created for the express purpose of letting one experience the blooming of their full powers from a total zero starting point. They're necessary for keeping public order in Japan."
LO-mother****ing-L

In fairness IGNs article was basicly MAKE THEM LIKE FALLOUT 3 coupled with some very obvious statements (and a couple of valid complaints too)! I think asking Japanese developers to adopt a more western style because your country makes stupid games is a bit thick, though. We know better because we're all a foot taller and eat hamburgers.

Eh not really, a lot of their issues with the majority to JRPGs pointed to some which did it right, while other points like "saves <4hrs apart" are pretty much standard fare across all genres these days, for good reason.

One of the great successes of Bethesda's games...With Western RPGs implementing fully animated, interactive dialogue sequences...Japanese developers need only look at the popularity of games like Fallout 3...Games like Diablo and the recently released Borderlands...

They point to WRPGs that they prefer the style of. They only refer to two JRPGs doing things right, Knight Chronicles and Persona. Everything else they say about them is negative and only positive things about WRPGs. It just comes off as IGN saying that Japanese developers should make them more like Western games because IGN says so.

And Breath of Fire and FF VI?

Nice cherry-picking, shall I try?

Although some JRPGs still attempt to keep this broad structure, many have been tragically limited.... We love anime and we love the Japanese aesthetic, but developers need to shake things up a bit and give us characters that we haven't seen before..... Not all JRPGs follow the stereotypical plots we've grown a little too accustomed to (the Persona series shows us that the Japanese can get real creative in that department), but we want some innovation when it comes to storytelling..... White Knight Chronicles, is a perfect example of a JRPG that is trying to capitalize on the popularity of online gaming..... A good battle system needs a good hook -- something to set it apart from its peers. Think Final Fantasy VI's Magicite or Breath of Fire's dragon transformations......

Most of the points they made seem fairly reasonable and balanced. Some come down to personal opinion but even then the article is nowhere near "MAKE JRPGs JUST LIKE WESTERN"

I agree with IGN, JRPGs have generally stagnated IMO and become very dull and boring. Though western RPGs have become the same for the most part.

It's funny how the self-righteous Japanese gamers view this as such an offense on the honour of Japanese game devs and Japanese culture itself.

I mean heck, it's not as if they came up with JRPGs to begin with, JRPGs have their origins within western RPG series like the original Ultima and Wizardry games.

They should make a list on how to improve western rpgs too, that would shut up all the weebs and possibly do some good. Of course, IGN is probably too busy sucking developer dick to say anything bad about games like fallout 3.

Honestly, I don't really think the Japanese make the games to have fun shit to play with, they just make 'em because it has become part of their culture. That's also why they're so butthurt about people saying JRPGs suck. Which I agree with btw, they suck complete dick. Last JRPG I enjoyed was FF7.

When my weeaboo friends take out their DS's and say "hey I imported a great Japanese RPG I wanna show you" I usually watch them play for about 5 minutes, then I go for a smoke.

Only people I know who like that shit are asians and white people who go on those Japan school trips and are part of the anime club.

BTW, Fallout 3 was ok. It was better than Oblivion, but still had the gayness about it.

I can't stand any Japanese RPGs. I'm not interested in their culture.

JRPGs suck.

Do these people seriously get paid for writing the bleedin' obvious?

Most modern WRPGs suck too, but thats besides the point.

There are some JRPGs that are still managing to be interesting IMO, like the Shin Megami Tensei games.

If you own a PS2 and haven't tried one of'em, you should put it on your priority list.

Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4 on the PS2 is really good according to what I've heard from friends who generally despise JRPGs and have a taste similar to my own, haven't gotten around to playing it yet though.

I wonder whether it is. A lot of the criticisms IGN level at JRPGs could be leveled at Western ones too. They don't help their case by claiming that "One of the great successes of Bethesda's games is that the worlds feel alive. They look like they've been lived in." I think they're blinded by the comparison at hand. Few would claim that Fallout 3's community of personality drained Automated Questing Machines are especially advanced in the wider gaming sphere.

I wonder if all the weirdness of Japanese people comes from nuclear radiation or something.

Persona 3 is good as well, Gargantou. 1 and 2 are grindfests(even moreso) unfortunately.

I do not care for most JRPGs. But it works for Japan, so why complain? It's not like they have to play them.

In other notes I'm starting to look forward to Knights Chronickes.

YOU AMERICAN GI ARWAYS COMPRAINING ABOUT JAPAN!!!

I love how people get so freakin defensive over something so stupid

Yeah, its pretty funny how offended some people get over this.

Instead of "GTA clones", they get "FF clones".

EDIT: Also, I watched some of the FF XIII trailers. Goddamn all the shitty melodramatics made me cringe.

Possibly so, but they suck less, which is the first step on the long hard road to being good.

Where as JRPGs are just plain rubbish.

Even though a lot of criticisms IGN posted could be leveled at WRPG"s too, I feel like JRPG fanboys are getting too defensive too. In the Bioware forums I posted a comment by Bioware's co founder Ray Muzyka that JRPG's need to evolve. As soon as I posted it a lot of these JRPG fanboys began to post saying how JRPG's are way superior.

FFXII were one of the better FFs in recent years in my opinion.

It's a shame the most well-written FF(Namely FF Tactics for the PS1 or its remake for the PSP) are dwarfed by the main FFs.

You weren't put off the game at all when you suddenly realise you're some pissweak kid? That also befriends other pissweak kids.

But then Fran joins and I was hooked.

How the **** would you know.

CAN YOU READ JAPANESE NO

Hiragana_no.gif

Yeah, lotsa trolls.

I know what you're getting at but I GOT A GOOD FEELING.

Well yes, I fail to mention the awful translation of FFT on the PS1, but the re-translation for the PSP remake was tons better, and managed to properly convey the Shakespearian tone.

In my opinion anyway.
