you dont need to buy a game to use steam. you need to buy a game to use all the current free games on steam. steam will always be a free download and a tool for selling games.

If you own HL, your CD key will work so you can play HL and it's mods.. If you own CounterStrike retail, you still get to play Hl and all the mods.. If you own OP4 , you still get to play Hl and all it's mods including CS 1.6, and if you don't own any of them you should be kicked back to the store to pick up a copy.

Personally I don't think that Valve really cares that much about the mods for HL1 anymore since they will be more focused on the upcoming and much better mods for Half-Life2 so who knows, maybe CounterStrike 1.6 will stay free forever as they try to sell CS 2.0

wrong everyone, downloading the newest version of halflife and 1.6 cs will give you the steam interface supposedly! so weshall see, youi wont have to buy any new games, kind of like when you buy hl2 at the stores you can use steam with it and play at other peoples houses without the disk!

With one cd-key, from any of the games in the list, you'll be able to play all of the games listed as of now in the games menu.

Your cd key should also be stored in your windows registry if you still have a HL game installed.

indeed... you're not gonna mess anything up if you just follow instructions

start, run, type regedit

click hkey_current_user
click Software
click Valve
click counter-strike
click on settings, and further down on the right part of the window, you'll see Key... you can double-click this and copy paste key to back it up if you don't have it stored anywhere else
