Jeux France has gotten some hands-on time with a near complete build of Red Steel. They have taken a lot of video feed from many levels. These videos are packed with spoilers but if you want to see them you can here:

The Official Nintendo Magazine UK had some postive impressions of Red Steel:


Controls have been vastly improved, due to three aspects. Final build Wiimote, refined sensor bar (most likely the one we saw last week at the Nintendo World Store), and Ubisoft’s time spent tweaking the game.

Gesture towards defeated enemies to tell them where to go.

Some aspects of the game are still a secret.

Graphics are simply amazing. Forget everything you have seen from all the Red Steel videos up until now. Unbelievably smooth character animations, night time dojo level is gorgeous, rain and lighting storm is very well done, compared to RE4’s village area, but more impressive.

One portion of the game has you escaping a burning dojo that features ” the best fire effects we’ve ever seen”.

Version of the game played was 16:9 widescreen 480p at 60 frames per second.


From watching the videos I must say this game is really coming along nicely. So many little touches added my the motion sensitive controls of the Wii controller. Amazing stuff in my opinion.

Are you serious? The gameplay presented in the videos looks terrible.

I have to agree. Just look at the guy playing trying to navigate himself around simple corners and down corridors - it looks terrible! Completely unintuitive and awkward. I've yet to see any gameplay footage that doesn't look very poor.
 
Red steel looks exactly like why the wii controller isn't such a great idea after all. The way he controls his character looks like he is trying to ride a bike with square wheels.

This is where I completely disagree. It looks more like an example of a developer not using the wiimote well. Mark my words - there will be games that are excellent with the wiimote, and more suited than on a mouse or joypad.
 
I say we wait till we get to play it :p

Besides, Red Steel is in my Wii bundle, so I'll tell you how it is if you want!\


However, the music sounds awesome.
 
I agree, it looks very promising but we'll have to wait to find out how the controller feels and plays in real life. Maybe it is hard to master the movements but to me that's something worth practicing for.

Exactly. Take a look at the latest Metroid Prime 3 footage. The sensitivity options they added now make it very intuitive and cool.
 
This guy was doing fine until he switched to the wide sweeping motion setting and then proceded to continue using small motions.

I think it looks awesome. I like the level design too.
 
Developers had trouble adapting to analog joysticks when they first came around. The Wiimote isn't some magical device that "just works". It's going to take some getting used to. Every single fundamental change in videogame controllers had problems, and this is no different.
 
You guys need to realize that the controls will need to be learned and fine-tuned, which allows for a better overall experience.

I've seen videos of people who have no problem playing and then I've seen videos of just the opposite. What does that tell me? That the controls aren't the problem, but rather the user.
 
Wow, people are actually agree'ing with me when I say this game looks like utter tripe.
 
It should also be noted that not all the videos showcase the developer playing, so there may very well be a learning curve. There tends to be a pretty drastic difference between some of the videos, concerning the player's skill level. Also, he may have been demonstrating different control modes and was not as experienced with all of them.
Yeah, the player controls it a lot better in these new vids. Also it looks like there were different ppl playing it in vid 2, 3 and then in 4.
