30th = Gold date?

Time after time we've all heard Gabe and other Valve employee's say HL2 was going to be released on Sept. 30th. What if they meant it was going to be release as GOLD on the 30th? They haven't really said that it was going to be in the stores on the 30th or the 1st. I'm just saying, don't be surprised if we hear the game goes gold on the 30th.

Actually, I believe there are quotes from Gabe saying the game should be on store shelves on the 30th... But, of course, everything is subject to change. Perhaps they need those extra few days to polish up the game. Who knows.

my view...

HL2 will be bundled with the radeon 9800xt and be on shelfs September 30th.

Hl2 will be available via steam september 30th

Hl2 official retail box game will be available a couple of weeks into october.

By doing this valve and ATI will make a killing in the market by doing this first. Valve of course gets tons more money by selling via steam than through sierra. ATI gets more sales having HL2 come with it.

If Valve want to announce a Delay they would have done it 2 weeks ago !

The game is finished and ready to ship, and I expect Valve to announce ' something ' in a couple of days, Hopefully at Monday....

Well if they are going to be preloading HL2 with Steam a week before release (which they had better, because that's the entire point of Steam...so people don't all clog the servers at once downloading something), it depends on how they figure a week then :| It could be the 7-day variety, or the 5-day business week. Either one would set the download into motion some time this coming week.

That press event on Alcatraz is scheduled for the 30th as well, right? So, it's not like it's ONLY the game's release that should happen that day; there are other planned events by companies like ATi, who probably doesn't want to change their major press release date and release date of their new 9800XT.

I kinda doubt ATI would've set up these events if they weren't pretty sure that Valve was gonna stick to the release date or very very near it, with the worst case being that it goes gold the 30th and is in stores the second week of October or so. I'm still planning on Sept 30th though. I even told work I had a "dentist appointment" that afternoon...

I think this thread bears a striking resemblance to a delay thread :dozey:

We don't have long to wait now, I'd say the best thing we can do is get on with our lives, and let the 30th creep up on us. By then, we'll either have the game, or know what's going on with it.

except that the 9800xt's arent going to be on store shelves for two or three weeks.

I think September 30 is the gold date and the Steam release date.

I've read all Valve interviews and the whole of the Valve email thread, not once did they say September 30 is the shelf date. It wouldn't make sense for them to say that, either, because they do not control physical publishing and distribution.

In fact, in the latest email reply, Gabe talks with uncertainty about a delay before the game hits store shelves after release. This confirms that the firm previously-announced release date of September 30 is not the shelf date, but rather the Steam release date.

Maybe it goes gold on september 30th, but I don't think it will be released through Steam on that date. That would mean I have to wait like a week before I can buy the retail once it has gone gold, while everyone is playing through Steam. I would too then, so the majority of the gamers will buy it through Steam in that case I think. I don't think Vivendi would like that very much (they don't earn a cent when Valve releases through Steam)

It would be something special though, brining out such a large game first through the internet and then into the stores. But I doubt it.

I think that if there was a delay...Valve would have announced it a couple of weeks ago...
Even if it's a small delay they would have said that they're running into small delays and it'll ship a week or two later than the expected release...There's no reason for a 2 month delay @ this point after what spitcodfry reported to us. So IMO if they haven't said anything yet then they are on track for a September 30th release...How? I don't know

I have a suspiscion that Valve will 'sneak in' a small delay.

They'll issue a press release saying:
"Half-Life 2 has gone gold! Valve has finished work on the title and the game is currently being mass-produced, and will be in stores on October 8th.
