Well maybe...

Update:

#1

Apogee Software and Deep Silver have issued a statement to Shacknews, confirming that the situation at 3D Realms has not affected the development of Frontline Games' upcoming handheld Duke Nukem Trilogy.

"Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms," a representative for the companies told us. "Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned."

#2

Duke Nukem Forever publisher Take-Two has confirmed to Shacknews that it was not funding ongoing development of the 3D Realms project.

"We can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title," said Take-Two VP of communications Alan Lewis in a prepared statement.

"In addition, Take-Two continues to retain the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever," he added.

#3

3D Realms webmaster Joe Siegler has commented on the shut down, stating: "It's not a marketing thing. It's true. I have nothing further to say at this time."

Siegler's post also reflects the unexpected nature of the shut down, as he was unaware of the impending situation during an interview conducted yesterday afternoon.

A very reliable source close to Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms today confirmed to Shacknews that the company has been shut down.

Hmm....

Really hope that all the work on Duke Forever hasn't gone to waste. Would be a real shame for it to die after so much hard work by many devs.

Yeah, bullshit.
They just had an update on their website yesterday, making a post about Wolfenstein 3D's birthday.

Its True....sad day indeed..

If this is truly the end of DNF they need to release all the versions they built for fun...or someone needs to take over..

Perhaps it is best for DNF to go out this way. That mythical first-person epic that could have been...

people always joked about it never being released but i never ****ing thought it would come true.

nothing. they've supposedly spent all their creative efforts and time making dnf which would be a GREAT shame to never see the light of day. probably more for the devs who spent all their hours making the thing. gutted for them really

implying that 3D Realms actually did any kind of work at all

Maybe I am too stupid to see it, but I just don't see what the author is trying to say in the "letter". Was DNF never indented to get released, ever? Cannot say I understand at all.

FYI Charlie Wiederhold works at Gearbox (which was like a home for ex-3DRealms devs like Ritual).

by the way, that article posted is a year old and was written as a joke by charlie wiederhold

Another marketing ploy methinks.

Gamespot confirms the closure, but I doubt this is the end for Duke. I'm guessing its a asset that can be cannabalised by another company.

But with E3 less than a month away, it still could be a ploy

ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ...hahahahhahahahhahaha ..HAH!

cant wait for the inevitable disgruntled ex-employer forum post revealing all the sorid details. bet DNF was nowhere near completion

**** you George B, I had no faith you'd ever bring DNF to market

They haven't developed a game since the mid 90's.
All they have done since then is publish one 3rd party game after another.
DNF is nothing but Vaporware. All they managed to release over the past few years is Pre-rendered footage and a couple of "in-game" screenshots. Good ****ing riddance!

thanks to all who participated :E

Absinthe nailed it; better to go out like this than release a game that could never have met expectations
