Wait, you actually had some semblence of a hope for this game?

There's no way this can be bad. Either they ship out a laughable piece of crap or they completely can it and accept what a massive financial sinkhole they are. Either way, it's a pleasing spectacle.

I can't believe people in the comments section are actually crediting 3D Realms with Max Payne and whatnot.
 
But I want to play the damn game. Been so long since I got a chance to listen to a stupid guy with more guns then brain cells spout one liners and shoot horrible mutants.

I mean Serious Sam was fun but he was no Duke

I think they're also factoring in all the money that Take-Two has given them over the past century just to make the damn game.

In March, Take-Two changed the deal: the company will pay $4.25 million for delivery -- but with a bonus promissory note of $500,000 if the game arrives by December 31, 2006.

One of em's got it wrong. I suspect it's Gamespot. From $6 million to $4,250 is quite a big jump.

3DRealms should be credited for it, they have put a lot of work in both max payne and Prey, a lot of the ideas came from them and their guiding hand helped the talent in remedy truly express themselves.

This has been the big news lately. Not like it will really matter--they haven't shown anything close to final to anyone yet, so how in the world do they plan on finishing this in the next 6 months? This one should just disappear....

Duke Nukem 3D was a laughable piece of crap, thats what made it so fun :)

WHAT? Almost all the ideas for Max Payne came from Remedy and Sam Lake.
 
Ok, I know a bit of this story, but can someone fill me in on why this has been so long in development? I know the switched engines or something at some point, but that couldnt be the sole reason. Do these guys just work one day a week or something?
 
I'm sure I wasn't the only one to notice the irony that in racing, DNF means Did Not Finish. Duke Nukem Forever, or DNF, is a very fitting title apparently.

I still find some things in that video incredibly impressive, like the rpg-like finger usage (no game has ever been able to model fingers to do that to my knowledge), the impressive photo-realistic faces (the eye movement is especially very well done for that time) and some of the other graphics just look great.
 
I thought DNF was IP owned by 3D Realms and thought it was wholly self-funded. The only thing I thought Take-Two was to provide was manufacturing and distribution. If my thoughts are correct, that extra payout is the benefit of "publishing" the game.
 
$6 million for a game that's taken 10 years is a pittance anyway, considering they have to pay everyone in their team for all that time.

Unless they have other sources of income.

3DRealms was merely a publisher. Max Payne was pretty much an endeavor undertaken solely by Remedy. And they can take little credit for Prey in its current state.

They're a one-off developer that pretty much stopped trying and found more success in publishing. But even then, they're still a joke.

That is not true they activly participate in development, they do not publish they produce. Plus they have a policy of letting the dev team retain their IP, now since both Max Payne and Prey IP's are owned by 3Drealms, that means they are the ones who first came with the idea, unless offcourse they have changed that policy. Which seams unlikely since they still pride themselves in that policy. Second if you read Miller blog you can clearly see why certain things where done in Max Payne, which philosophy was behind them. 3Drealms lend their experience and money to help develop ideas for which they have no time, and nurture up and coming studio's which is something to be commended. Most of the credit for Mp and prey does indeed go to the dev's, and 3drealms does not take credit for work they did not do, but they are certainly very much involved in design decisions from start to finish.

Seems like everyone agrees the game won't make it this year. I don't know squat about the game business, 3D realm or whatever, so I'll just believe you guys. Still, 500k is a lot of money. It has to have had some impact on the devs, doesn't it?

I certainly would like to see dnf by the end of this year, but that's hoping for a lot. Considering the extreme development time of dnf USD 0.5M really isn't all that much money. If monies were that important to them the game would have been released eons ago anyway.

I still believe that the game will be released "when it's done". Discussion about when that will be is meaningless at this point.

It seems that gamespot have updated it:

"In March 2005, the Company [Take-Two] renegotiated a $6,000 contingent obligation due upon delivery of the final PC version of Duke Nukem Forever through the payment of $4,250 and issuance of a promissory note in the principal amount of $500," read the 10-Q, listing figures in thousands of dollars--i.e. $4,250 = $4.25 million. "The payment of the promissory note is contingent upon the commercial release of such product prior to December 31, 2006."

The Beatles managed to have their entire career in the time it's taken DNF to not come out. Damn!

Is there a timeline showing how this project has pregressed? ie Anouncement, 1st engine switch, second engine switch etc.

QFT. When Broussard claims that mistakes were made it's the biggest F***ing understatement in the long sad history of F***ing understatements. It's funny...in my world...people who miss their deadline by even a month get canned.....that's quite a leash for a game based on a character that ripped off every Bruce Campbell one-liner...EVER. Duke Nukem 3D was lame. The character is lame. There were far better games when D3D was out and I guarantee there will be better games if DNF comes out.

The even bigger joke is the folks who hang around the 3D Realms Forums. Keep the faith suck....er.....brothers.

Personally, I'm not buying the game out of principle. If 3D Realms is unwilling to punish a complete sack of shit like Broussard, then I'm going to have to do my part. I can't stand incompetent turds that continue to get paid.....see William Clay Ford Jr.
