ye he is right. I can just see hl2 having some kinda converter that will convert all files. Just run on the basics .max .xsi etc... since max4 runes on .max when exported as well as max5, then I can;t see any trouble. If you have max4 and not into illigal downloading then u shopuld have no problem with max4, but I would just get max5 incase
Hmmmmm.... a mds file is your standard save file. To use your model in anything else u have to export it. When u export it then it makes it a .max file or what ever format u choose. I didn;t think u can use 3ds files in anyway except 3dsmax.
hmmm saving a file in max makes a .max. Exporting allows you to choose a number of standards, the most widely used one is the .3ds.
I doubt you'll be able to convert .max files for the hl2 engine, because .max files are more of a script that tell max to do when it opens it. Also it contains lots of max specific data. e.g. it can contain editable polies while 3ds only contains editable meshes.
.3ds on the other hand contains the actual meshes, materials etc.
it will be for then ewer versions of max
max5 and 6 i dont think max4 .
max4 .max file is different from the max5 .max file and max4 plugins cant be used for max 5 u may never know it could work some do.
I don't think that's true most plugins for r4 work perfectly in r5. Very little of the actual architecture was changed from max 4 to max 5.
max 4 files open perfectly in max 5 and the only reason you might have trouble the other way is because of the GI rendering capabilities of the scanline renderer in max 5 and some IK issues.
