40 MILLION dollars...

I wonder how many pounds of rice 40$ million could buy.. hmm.

lol , i have a perfect plan for charities, once a year they announce on the day of the Lottery, that its been cancelled and the generated prize money for that week has been donated to a good cause, would make them more than them crazy fund raisers.

And if some complete and utter twat can get away with a 137 million dollar piece of turd like Pearl Harbour (The Movie), then valve can get away with a 40 million dollar video game.

WELCOME TO EARTH!

Don't wanna be picky but Pearl Harbor cost $139 Million USD :

EDIT:i dnt mind the pearl harbor movie lol , probly coz im a WWII freak :)

Sum1 shuld ask Gabe is any of profits from HL2 will go to charities

Just think how much money HL2 is gonna make , seeing as HL1 sold over 8million units.

Its not a big deal, Newell was a programmer for microsoft b4 this. So obviously he could give half-life away if he wanted to. He just wants to make really greak games that gamers expect these days. So its more like a hobby than a business. :)

so everyone who worked at micrososft can retire? :dozey:

So? Do any of you realise how big the market for computer games is?
Do you realise how much it will and is expanding?

$40 million is alot of money for mere mortals but the return on a game like HL2 will probably be 10x that amount.

The only drawback for these kind of games in the amount of time needed to create a game like HL2 5-6 years is just to long a time.
Can't say im always happy about the big Electronic Art$ but they pump out games at a incredable rate and guess what? They sell like pancakes.
$2,9 billion turnover just this year.

Hell soon videogames will be as big as the porn industry ;) and after that? EVEN BIGGER. :farmer:

Now when will Valve start selling shares...... :E

Well, I think that this sum of money is really staggering but the fact is that the game industry is already the largest and most profitable branch of the entertaniment industry. Therefore, we shouldn't be surprised by the expenses for a game which was 6 years "under-construction". In addition, we mustn't forget that this money went out from VALVe's own pocket. I wonder if Vivendi would be prepared to invest so much in only one company...

And another thing about Steam. I believe this is the only logical move they could do. Look at the music industry which is now (a bit late) moving to the internet as a way of distributing the music to the people (like iTunes and the rest of the gang). The only thing they can do to limit the piracy is to distribute games on the internet. Some people don't even know you have to go to the shop to get a game/music/movie.
