5.1 sound now the minimum for proper gameplay?

Are we now to the point where you can say that 5.1 surround is a requirement for proper gameplay?

Not just for ear candy mind you, But am I going to get shot in back, strangled or clocked over the head with a pipe because
I can't here, or properly locate an enemy that is behind me.

Nothing drives me more crazy than getting killed because of a stinkin' HW issue!

You can get Logitech Z-640s for about $50, they're decent quality 5.1 speakers, and about the cheapest on the market

I've got the Logitech Z560's upstairs, delivering way WAY too much punch for the living area (the sub is I N S A N E!), and for downstairs I have the Z680's (Best. Sound. Set. EVAR!) and a pair of "5.1" headphones (Zalman something something).

Of all of these the Z680's are my favorites, really must be heard to be beleived. They can go from 0 to deafening, without destortion, in a heartbeat.
But unfortunately the neigbours arent to thrilled with them (there is 3+ meters of solid concrete, and then about 10 meters of open space, between me and them, and it knocked one of their picture frames off the wall because of the bass), so i had to get the headphones for evening play. Not to bad in sound but a bit lacking in realism.

I've got a pair of E150 AKG headphones and Cambridge cheapest 4.1 speakers from way back when (FPS1000 what's in a name). Speakers tend to go way too loud indeed...especially the better 5.1 and Dolby/THX certified speakers. When I get me a solid concrete house, I'll get me a Klipsch Pro Media Audio 6.1 set or something.

I have Sennheiser headphones. They were pretty expensive, but I don't use speakers at all so it's ok. Besides, I don't even have the room to put any speakers behind me.

I go with brute force stereo instead of surround. I gonna build a surround system later on... but i dont have any money left because the stereo cost me a year pay

My wife has rejected the idea that I patch into our good surround system across the room, the one by the big screen- doldby digital w 6 channels at 150w each, plus an 800w sub. so much for big screen gaming.
can you imagine 1500w+ of digital audio in HL2 or D3??
I may do it once just hear it play. Although I would be risking marriage counselling / and a visit from the police. could be fun though.

watt is so missleading. My NAD C352 pumps out 2x80w, and thats more than enough for my Cerwin Vega V12-F (12" bases) to play the s**t out of my and everyother house on the street. So i really dont wanna think about what will happen if it was 2x750w

NAD and CV both are good items, NAD has lots of headroom!!
in a former life i was a high end audiophile.

I am an ADCOM / onkyo / Sony ES+XBR man myself.

nice to see someone else with a good ear still around.
