Right now I have a gig of pc2700 ram in DC mode. Would getting 512 of pc3200 be better than having a gig of 2700?

Asus p4p800 SE
p4 3.0E
1 gig of pc2700 DC
SB Audigy 2 ZS
Radeon 9800 pro.

Thanks for any help.

get the 3200 theres no point in having 1 gig if its PC2700

but it its either the faster 500mb or the slower 1 gig, i might go with the slower 1 gig
when i started out, i got 500mb PC3200, and recently upgraded to 1gig PC3200

I would hold onto the 1gb of PC2700. There is a much bigger difference between 1gb and 512mb than PC3200 and PC2700.

You'd kick yourself later if you went to 512mb PC3200. Unless you were going to buy another 512mb soon after. ;)
But it costs more. I still have PC2700, although it is OCed to 8Mhz shy of PC3200 @ 2-2-2-5...

I will buy new memory on my next Mobo/CPU upgrade. ;) IMO it would cost too much to buy new PC3200 to replace my PC2700.

alright, thanks for the help. I'll just hold on to my gig of 2700 until i can afford to get 2x 512 of pc 3200

Stick with the gig of PC2700. Unless you're going to overclock, there's a minor difference in performance between DDR333 and DDR400.

Hey Asus have you heard of the new RAM I just got? SuperTalent? Works great, seems good to me, then again I went from 512mb to 1GB Dual, but came with heatsinks and everything for $144 so I didn't think it was bad.

Wait...You can have a higher PC# than the given one on your computer? Can someone help me out (harware n00b), because my computer is telling me that I can only take 2048MB DDR PC2100 (I have a Gateway 500S, yes...I know).

you can install PC3200, but it will only run at PC2100
so dont waste your money ;-)

Yeah my new PC3200 is only running at PC2100 speeds because of my cpu's fsb, but that'll change if I get an Athlon 64. It's not even running at full speed and it seems very fast to me as it is.

now i have a question :)
about CAS Latency
when i decided to buy my 2nd 512PC3200 module, i noticed there were 2 types
CAS 2.5 and CAS 3.0
2.5 being about £5 more

that option wasnt there when i first bought the RAM (Corsair Value Select) but i found out i had 2.5 with the product code
(www.overclockers.co.uk)
i bought the 2.5 to be safe.
is it possible to buy 2.5 and 3.0 and run at the 2.5 timings? and hence save a little money ;)

No the 2.5 would probably be brought up to 3.0, unless I think you could manually change the 3.0 RAM to 2.5 but that's probably like overclocking and dangerous. Just get the 2.5.

the corsair pc3200 512x2 products are actually kind of silly

the OEM package is rated at 2.5-3-3

the Retail package is the one with "c3" at the end and is rated at 3-3-3 but runs at 2.5-3-3 and will auto detect as 2.5 in every motherboard I've ever used it in

technically they should be charging LESS for the OEM 2.5 then the retail

well, i did get the CAS2.5 just to be safe
but i do know where to change the timings, though i just leave it to get them from the SPD or whatever that things is

btw, im running in dual channel mode, i never mentioned
